Like Naed, I've always considered the 240sx an econocar and not a true sports car. It's got an anemic 4 cylinder (from the factory, anyway), and is tiny. It also gets fuel milage to rival the Versa, and was fairly inexpensive. Those sound like the makings of an economy car to me.But that's a pointless argument that will never die. It's all down to perspective. The RWD puts it into the "sporty" category that most of it's front-driver contemporaries only dream about, though.
The Subaru Impreza is an economy car, but you see it tuned to STi form and it becomes a monster. Performance-tuned economy cars are booming these days.
So it wouldn't be surprising to see similar options become available for the Versa. The MR18DE (Versa's motor) likely responds well to forced induction, which means, like the 240, it can be made less anemic with a bit of money. And Nissan is known for making some very capable chassis that do a lot with a bit of suspension modification. It's likely that good shocks and springs and new anti-roll bars combined with a good set of wheels and tires will do a LOT for the Versa's handling characteristics.
