I have a 91 SE w/ 150K...I've replaced fuel filter, plugs, 02 sensor and have removed the AIV components.

Sometimes it will idle just fine...most of the time it will hang around 1K and will surge anywhere up to 2.5K...sometimes it will rev from 1K to 2K repeatedly almost like I was tapping the gas...

Does the KA have a PCV valve? What else effects/controls idling?

I don't know if it's related or not, but today for just 5 minutes, when I wasn't giving it gas the RPMs would just drop and the engine would die. If I gave it a little gas, it would stay alive and the engine would stutter a little, if I gave it full gas it seemed fine...

Could be MAS, TPS or a host of other sensors that cause idle problems.

Best bet is to do an ECU check.

Sounds like your IAC is playing by a different set of rules. I am with [s3] on this ,run codes see if something is stored in there. coolant temp connectivity issues could also cause this. with the car idleing disconnect the 2 wire coolant temp seansor and compare what it does to what you are experiancing, is it the same reaction as the surge you describe? while its unplugged look at the terminals if there gunked up with green crusty build up clean it up with some battery terminal cleaner and tighten the female openings in the connecter to fit tighter on the sensor terminals.

This is a diagnostic/drivability issue. I am moving it to the "online mechanic forum"
