I have an Alpine 4x50 (MRP-F240) that I picked up on sale for $100 powering my mids. It sounds pretty good. Frequency response is narrower than I'd like at 20-20000. THD is a little high at .08%, but for a simple sytem like mine it sounds crystal clear. Of course, I also have A Clarion HX-D10 that has no internal amp and super noisless circuitry, so I can get away with the higher distortion level on the Alpine and not notice it. ever. Fit and finish is good, it's lightweight but solid feeling, never gets more than a little bit warm, and easily tucks under the seat of my s13. Good amp, especially for the money. You mentioned JL, and Hi-Fonics makes good amps too, as well as others. Really, though, decide what kind of power and sound qualities you want and get the best speakers you can afford (Like Boston Acoustics and I also like my Eclipse component set A LOT). Then get the best Headunit you can (like the HX-D10 or a Nakamichi) THEN decide on amps, they're really not as important as the other two. That's a good order for design priorities (and of course plan for wiring, sound deadening, crossovers, battery, etc. as the previous choices dictate). Oh, and, as was mentioned already, make sure you match the amp to the speakers. Running your speakers at full capacity (more power=more clarity) but not frying them is the most important bit about amps, really, as well as not introducing noise or negating your frequency response (like I did).
