Depends on what you're doing with it.

The only problem I have is software availability right now. I have a program that was made for it, but it's not available to download anymore as the guy who wrote the program is moving/changing jobs (he's in Australia) and I had to send the program to someone last week so they could use it.

There's another guy developing a program, but his webpage has been the same for months and months.

The programmer is pretty sweet once you get it all setup though. I can change injectors, pick my maf, and set timing and fuel for regular maps and knock maps. You can tune on the fly and it's not too bad to use. Once the map trace feature gets built into the software and you can see what part of the 16x16 grid your vehicle is operating in it should be a snap.

Anyway, it's 100x better than burning eproms, but I'm sure a Powerfc is way easier/nicer. I just didn't have $900 at the time, and I only have $200 into the emulator setup including socketing my own ecu.

The website has been taken down from the program I am using. It was called live edit.

You have to have a laptop to program with and to upload to the ecu. Basically the emulator pretends it is an eprom chip that holds all the fuel, timing and other important stuff. You can add fuel and it richens the mixture instantly. Then, you can unhook the laptop and the programming stays in the emulator, or you can burn an eprom chip and not have to use the emulator in the car.

goofynick6, I want to ask about Pocket ROMulator. On the web site it says you must switch ignition off to reset the ECU after downloading new data - is that true? I thought it was meant for real-time editing?

Also, are you using TechEdge? Cause that's the same I have, but both TechEdge and Romulator use COM port, but laptops have only 1 COM port at best. How do you get around this?Thanx!

OK,

You load the base map, then turn off the ignition, and then start the car..then you can change fuel/timing/misc with it running; you just have to reset the ecu by turning off the key after loading a base map because it throws the car into limp mode temporarily.

I switch back and forth; I'd like to get a serial to usb cord so I could use both at once, but oh well. I just turn off the wideband, then plug in the romulator, enable it, and tune, then switch again.

goofynick6: thanx, very valuable info What do you reckon, do other emulators allow on-the-fly editing? Was looking at this:http://www.futurlec.com/EPROMEmulator.shtml

Yes that s*x that you have to switch devices and start all those programs again... That's why I want LPT emulator

I would say that would work, however, I'm not sure if it would work with the liveedit software; it very well could but I don't want to say yes and then have a compatibility issue.

There is a new chip out that provides USB functionality through a standard RS-232 type interface. So you can plug it into your design with only minimal changes since it functions exactly like a MAX232. I would expect the TechEdge people to pick that up pretty soon.

Otherwise, you can buy a usb-serial converter that creates a com port. plms-developments.com has tested a few that do the job... they should work with the programmers and O2 controllers as well.

Techedge actually recommends a usb-serial converter I believe, since not all work the same. I've been meaning to get one but have so many other things going on.

Would actually need USB-2xCOM... or 2 USB-COM...
