Y'know I hate sounding old but when the hell did the bar for qualifying as a "diva" fall clean off the pegs and hit the floor? I'm sitting here watchin advertisements for some show where hoodrats and burbskanks can vie for the title of "diva". Not to long ago a Diva was an accomplished female vocalist who had perfected her craft over years and countless records. Now apparently all they have to do is posses a set of fake breasts and sing something, anything and not even well!I here people calling Jennifer Lopez and even Brittany Spears "divas':pukeI'm sorry kids, I know in this microwave generation where everything is easy and nobody has to earn what they have it would seem logical but it isn't.

Dianna Ross, Cher and possibly Madonna are Divas. They have the goods; they can sing their *** off, they know what they are about and they have for years upon years. Remember Debbie Gibson? Tiffany? of course you don't kids because when I was a teenager you actually had to have skills to last so they were treated by myself and people of my age group accordingly, as the worthless bubblegum pop soapscum on the showerdoor of music that they were; annoying, weak and very easy to clean off and forget.

And another thing about these Mariah Carrey and Christina Agulera cookie-cutter airheads. Just sing the friggin note!!! stetching it up and down with that ooooaaaaeeeeeeee crap while you wave your hand in faux emotion doesn't hide the fact that you are at best mediocre and at worst damned lucky that today's music fans :rolleyes have very low expectations and a pathetically short attention span.

Don't get me started on boy bands:tisk:

I use "kid because it's mainly the teens that are into worthless crap like this. Age does not indicate wisdom so I mean it as no insult, enjoy youth it's gone too quickly.:( I was a kid during the whole hairband thing so I have a few tapes somewhere in a box that I don't talk about but I didn't call Ratt "the greatest band of all time", it was what it was entertaining fluff.

my sentiments exactly, and i agree the artists you metioned can classify as diva's, lots of albums, over decades (like madonna) shows hard work, IMO. and i don't even like Madonna.

i do agree all these cookie-cutter singers are way over-hyped. and "ooooeeeeooooo" and dramatic hand gestures:a. drive me up the freaking wallb. don't classify you as a good singer

but i don't listen to that stuff anyway. but i see it enough on tv, with the awards shows and all that it makes me ILL.

(sade is my fav singer of all though. she's diva material all-right)

you kids and your rock & roll...

seriously though, all these 'pop' singers and boy bands and whatnot are horrible. It's a disgrace to musicians everywhere! Sing in key for crying out loud! It's not that hard!

I always found it amusing how they synthesize their voices on records and whatnot because their real voices are so bad. What ever happened to the days of big bands and barbershop quartets? I love that a capella stuff, dunno why. You guys ever watch Scrubs? Ted, the lawyer, has a quartet that sings old cartoon themes, prime time hits, and some other stuff, its hilarious!

ah, its too late for me, its been a long week... I am gonna hit the sack. G'night to you all! I'll be back early tomorrow cause I am bored as all heck right now until I hear back on some jobs... :(

Mad is right on the money. I can only watch a Mariah Carey/Britney Spears/JLo/Christina Aquilera videos with the sound off. They're all great looking but they all sound like technified screeching and vocal gymnastics filtered thru a synthesized jockstrap. I say more straight singing and less tarzan screeches...

its beeen like a year since I've seen these ppeople and more years since I have actually heard them. I find their Diva **** hard to hear about and their remanufactred voice hard to put up with.

Also, punk bands. How many times have you heard a stupid boy band or some bad band call themselves punk and then sell like a million albums. Its crap.

Yeah, not all recent music blows nut. There are plenty that do, of course, but don't let Creed and Good Charlotte ruin it for those who are actually respectable.

On a personal note, Evanescence or whatever the hell that horrible sh1t is, needs to die. :(

I like anything that has feeling in it. I like some of the new less hicky country stuff, old leather clad spike encrusted heavy metal, tons of classic rock, old Rap, some of the new rap but not a lot(you have five cars, mad hos and a gat I get it, move on already)Where is Chuck D when we need him?I listen to a lot of Japanese pop(you think white people look stupid when they try to act black wait till you see lil takeshi :rotflmao) Japanese hard core friggin rocks, the kids are pissed and they are taking it out on the instruments, raw and real, good stuff. A buddy of mine asked "why do you listen to that, you can't understand it". I said "can you understand half of the punk or heavy metal songs in English"? Good music is good music. Anybody know where I can sign up for American Idol?:pface

To anybody under 25 on this board:

Your assignment is to obtain a copy of Operation Mindcrime on CD. Find a car (or a house) with a bad a$$ audio system. Prepar some snacks and adult beverages, and indulge yourself in the virtuosity and sonic fury that is (was)Quensryche.

Enjoy kids!

oh man! THMS, i'd love to get into j-pop/j-rock. know of anything i can get into? as in freakin good j-rock would be nice... as for rap, well, i keep my opinions to myself about that genre, as i could never really get into and like it. although old school rap is tolerable and fun to listen to. not like the crap they have these days about 'how i'm so rich, look at me, i'm driving an Enzo and a Escalade.. blah blah blah" and the kids eat it all up i tells ya:rolleyes

edit: so much for me keeping my opinion to myself, oh well, i didn't *hurt* anyone

God, not J rock or J R&B.....Come on Sky, I thought you were ultra cool until that...lol. Some of the Techno/Trance isn't bad.

Back on topic....I'm a retro guy myself...Hell the other nite I burned a CD full of Cinderella and the rest of the big hair bands. You just don't hear guitar riffs like that anymore.

Oh, I guess this was about Diva's or whatever....Ahh, I'd sleep with all the Diva's mentioned above...thats all I'm gonna say about that.

Chiming in a little late here, but technically speaking a diva is any accompishled vocalist with an 8 octave range, most often appearing in an opera("the fat lady"). Mariah Carey actually qualifies on the basis of covering an 8 octave range, as might Christina Aguilera(don't know, someone break out the tuning fork) but for all those who can't cover 8 octaves, stop accepting the label, go sell your records where you can like David Hasselhoff, make your money and get the hell off of my television.

Nothing wrong with Rage for Order or Empire either. Though their best is Operation Mindcrime. I did like Queensryhce, but I was more into Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Mettalica [Before they started to suck] (Kill em All through And Justice) and Ozzy. Then again that was 8th grade to highschool.
