I just recently brought a non-running 91 fastback "ka24de" a couple of months ago. It stopped running because of a broken camshaft. So I just replaced both camshafts, new timing chain, water pump, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor, fuel filter, and the battery.

I go to start it and all it does is makes this sound like something is winding up or just turning. no clicking, no grinding noises, just like a revving sound. It doesn't even try to turn over.

I am quite positive that I have the timing set right. cyclinder 1 is at TDC with the timing chains marks setting my intake cam at 12 o'clock and my exhaust cam at about 3 o'clock, and the distributor is set to fire at plug number 1.

N E 1 have any suggestions? maybe its the fuel pump? Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

is the engine even turning over? are the pulleys moving when you are trying to start it? Also recheck your cam shaft indexing, are you sure its not the other way around intake at 3 and exhuast at 12???

Nope it doesn't even try to turn over. The pulleys are turning though. could it be that I might have my camshafts set to the wrong TDC stroke??

You might be on the exhausting stroke... common mistake.

However, if the "revving" noise is loud... the starter may not be contacting the flywheel.

If the motor is turning over really fast but not starting... then it has no spark plugs or compression lol, but I'm pretty sure you've checked that one

Is it making sort of a wha wha wha sound as you turn over the motor or is it smooth and steady? If it's smooth and steady, you may have no compression. I'd suspect the cams may be switched, installed incorrectly, or something if that's the case.

I'm pretty sure the starter is making contact. And the sound is pretty smooth and steady. Loud but overly so. I will have time to run a compression test tommorrow. hopefully all goes well. Is there a easy way to tell if the cyclinder is on the compression or exhausting stroke?
