Engine won't shut off. Any suggestions?

I have a '75 datsun 710 station wagon. Last night I went to turn it off and the engine just kinda sputtered for about 15-30 seconds before finally turning off. Never thought I would have an issue turning off a 33 year old engine! So much datsun knowledge here, thought I would check before I go pouring through the manual.

The carb needs some cleaning. Go through and do the cap,rotor, plugs and plug wires too.

it could also be that your mechanical timing (advance) is not set correctly. If it has been adjusted to specs and the dieseling continues, try putting in higher octane fuel.

Apparently there is an anti-dieseling solenoid on the carb. it must not be working properly but i am not sure if it is just an electrical problem or a failure with the solenoid. looks like i will be doing my first work on the car...thanks for the info blind and JD...appreciate the tips...

lol reminds me of when my dad had to plug the exhaust because instead of replacing the carb he forced it to deliver fuel and the car ran RICH, it got to the point where he would have to undo the top of the air filter pull it out and plug the whole where the air is delivered

for a quick fix when you are turning it off, give it full throttle. that should introduce too much air and stall it out. i had to do it every time on my L20

that is good advice. the "cold" weather we've had here I think has helped too. i've cleaned the carb as best i could. changed the oil and filter. new fuel filter. new spark plugs. everything else looked fine. took apart the solenoid as it was located on the back of the carb. unfortunately, damn thing looks fine. well lubricated. pushes in and out fine manually. might be electrical, but i dont know much about the electronics so i'd be better off just spending the $26 and replacing it. probably put it off now that the colder weather seems to be doing the trick. i've been v. fortunate to have the original owners manual...you know the kind that actually tells you how to fix things on a car...not just some shorthand version w/ the solution always being --> take to dealer and bend over.

If the things you have done still don't do the trick (which they should) you could adjust the idle speed. It has worked for me in the past. Good luck.
