One thing I like is on heavily greased areas, is brake parts cleaner... it really cleans stuff good (it really eats through stuff, trust me)..... ONce you get all the heavy grease off with that, apply some simple green by spraying it full strenght over the engine bay... A gentle mist over everything will do it...

it is really helpful if the engine is warm when doing this..... it helps the water evaporate so it doesnt get where its not supposed to!! ..

Finally, I then hose the engine bay down with a gentle stream of water..... nothing extreme, NO PRESSURE..... just a nice gentle rinse to wash the water away..... Once its all rinsed off, you can take a leafblower to it and dry it that way, or just take the car for a 10-15 min drive... The engine being warm + the fan will dry it sufficiently.....

After that is finished, take some plastic care stuff (armor all is too greasy IMO) and spray it on... all done!!

Cover up your battery. Its not good to get any water on it or the connections. Better yet take it out and cover up any connections using bags and rubber bands.

That is always a good idea.

Good writeup! Anyone know how steam cleaning is done? Is that what they do at professional auto detailers?

Steam cleaning basically utilizes one of those hand held steam cleaners that has a steam temperature control built in. Usually no chemicals are required to be applied. The steam usually gets rid of grime and grease. Of course that is dependent on the temperature of the steam. Its quicker than the hose and chemical method and require removal of nothing. A friend of mine only uses distilled water in the steamer. Considerbly decrease the chances of water marks or mineral marks.
