I know on most engines they have the VIN some where on the engine. I can't find the VIN on this engine. If someone can help me find it that would be great. I bought the engine off e-bay and the valve cover is silver. I ordered a blacktop. It's a SR20DET, but I paid for a blacktop not a recolored redtop. If there's another way to tell the difference that would be great.

Looking at your ID picture, I don't see the fins on your head and a post with pictures shows and said that the later model redtops and blacktops have fins. I don't see fins on my head, and when I went outside to look I literally got **** on by a bird... My luck.

So I found the VIN on my engine. It's in between the turbo elbow and the transmission. The etching says "SR20-121119W" I got no clue what that means, besides the SR20 part.

Thats not the VIN but someone can chime in to as what it might be.

Search for Redtop vs. Blacktop differences on here.

My S14SR does NOT have fins.

Engine VINS dont tell us anything about the engine, nor when it was made. If the valve color was a slight gold or came with a distibutor and spark plug wires then it is an NA SR20DET. To get a general idea of when the engine may have been made look at the stamps on the coil packs, they can give clues to the age of the engine. As long as they have not been changed around.
