Those old engines are fun to work on. I enjoyed building a 2.0L for my 1973 620. Back in the day when we had to smog them I went around the system by building my L16 into a 2.0L. I pulled the crank shaft from an L20B and had the main ground down to fit the L16 block. I had a buddy of mine with a 520 that had an L18 with a performance cam. The thing broke down so he abandoned it. I pulled the round port head off and used that for my build. Those L16’s are short blocks so I ended up reusing the original rods but had a set of Mitsubishi pistons installed. They had the proper pin position and the machine shop machined the crowns for me. All in all it was a lot of fun and the results, at the time, were outstanding. A few years later they raised the smog cut off so that flung the doors open. Building a Z24 would be a cool build but with some side draft carbs slapped on maybe. The only reason why I pulled my Hybrid is because it wasn’t reliable enough. After the first couple of weeks the dual point distributor blew up but aside from that the constant valve and points adjustments. As years went on it would get the common leaky valve cover and cylinder head gaskets. That’s when I decided to drop in the KA24DE.
