Anyone know how much is would cost or anything at all about putting a V6 into the 03-04 M's? The gas mileage would be awesome. Let me know what you think.

Engine Swaps - espeially in today's highly regulated world of EFI and engine computers - are almost universally a BAD idea. You will lose out in the end on resale as well as the cost of conversion. Just trade your car and get a more efficient one if that's your goal. You want to spend $3-5k on a swap to get 1-2mpg better ? Nonsesne if you ask me....

Now putting v8's into Miatas is another matter but that's not what you asked

You'll notice the V6 M35's do not get substantially better fuel mileage than the M45s.

In short, waste of time. The money you'd spend on getting less HP and all the problems of an engine swap would have you about 5 years in gas.

Generally at cruise the weight and tire friction set the minimum HP required and that is created by a V8 or a V6 at roughly the same efficiency.

The lower displacement of the V6 means it must turn higher rpms to create the same 25 HP as the V8 for steady cruising. The alternator, PS, fans, AC compressor suck the same parasitic HP so you never gain as much as simple formula would indicate.

Displacement of 22% less usually nets out as a 10-12% saving in fuel.

I think you should go purchase a 4cyl datsun for $600 and forget about swapping the Y34 engine. That is the most extreme measure that I've ever heard of to save money on gas.

Get this:http://www.gasbuddy.com/

Datsun 510 30+ mpg

I'm thinking about an RB26DETT swap.....so it's sorta a V6 swap...

I have the engine coming, but I have to decide if I want to do the swap....

This may be the first time I've seen someone wanting to downgrade their car. The gas mileage wouldn't be awesome. I have a 2001 Infiniti I30 with the VQ V6 and I normally see mileage around 24-26mpg. That's not exactly mind-blowing, and my car is a good deal lighter than a Y34. It's not worth considering.

Seriously....you will do better if you keep your foot out of it. I can get 18ish in the city and 28ish on the highway. Take it easy on your car, and keep oil in it. I think exhaust might help us in this area as well. Only 1-3MPG though....

and then the next mod could be switching the badge from the M45 to M35 with a big Hybrid logo next to it or "EnergyStar"

No, make the chrome badge green! haha

I would say that the only engine that would replace the 4.5 is a LS1 or LS6...somethign like that with a 6spd stick. I could see MPG gettign better with a stick. Then I would supercharge it for global warming...to do my part! LOL

It would be a pain though! How would everything work? ECU wise? KTW
