engine surging

I have a 95 Xe pick up with the 2.4 four cyl. This truck has been a rock of reliability till two weeks ago. the engine surges right at 2000 rpms, but is otherwise drivable. Hold the pedal right at 2000 and it surges up to 2500 rpms. Step down on pedal, it stumbles and then runs fine. Tune up and new fuel filter made no change. Naturally, i have found no one who can read the codes on a truck of this vintage. I am going to clean the maf sensor as i have seen on some posts here. Anyone got any ideas? Am i barking up the wrong sensor by cleaning the maf. Any advice will be great. By the way, i have owned two Datsuns and two Nissan pick ups. Got the Hard Body truck in 86 and drove a 69 Datsun p.u in high school. Siezed water pump cooked the motor and sold it to a guy who did a full custom job on it. Will look forward to some good advice.
