I just bought a 1991 Nissan 240SX two weeks ago. My confidence in it is greatly shaken because there is a problem that threatens to cause me to get rid of it. Heres the problem:

Before I bought the car the owner (car lot) had a new clutch put in the car. I picked it up from the mechanic. I missed a few gears going home because it has been a while since I drove a standard shift vehicle. Should be no big deal. I didn't hit reverse instead of 5th gear or nothing like that!:) The next day going to work I noticed that the engine would rev up and the tachometer would drift up and down until I eased off the gas. It was worse on regular streets than on the highway. But it happened. It didn't happen right away but after maybe 10-15 minutes. Took it back to the mechanic and after a couple of test drives, I was told that the clutch was working perfectly. How frustrating that was. Back to the owner. He made some adjustments to the clutch on the inside of the car. Told me to drive it and see if it worked any better. I drove it back home and it seemed to work better. The clutch engaged closer to the floor board than before. The next morning it drove fine to work. After work - same problem. I limped home. This morning - same thing - ran fine. After work - limped home again.

When the car engine surges and the tachometer jumps up, it feels like the car has no power. Will more adjustment to the clutch help or is the transmission in need of some work?

Everything to me sounds like a bad clutch except when you say "surging"

is it surging? or is it like hitting the gas and rpm goes up but car doesnt move barley..

try putting it in 5th gear at a decent speed and slam the gas and see if it does this.

if so then clutch is most likely slipping.

Most cause for the release of the pedal on the floor is improper adj. and/or slave cylinder gone bad.

if this was a used car lot then its possible they didnt change the clutch and told you they did.

Also replacing a clutch is not a reason to get rid of any car.

Then the clutch is most likely slipping. Having the car in 5th gear still causes the rpm to go up but the car doesn't move any faster. In fact only the momentum of the car keeps it moving.

The clutch release doesn't happen on the floor, just closer to the floor than after I first got it. Could the slave cylinder be the full cause of this problem?

im with Und3rprshUr gotta be a worn clutch....

maybe its possible they did change the clutch disk but didnt even bother checking the flywheel and pressure plate... if the surfaces were worn bad or unevenly it could cause the new clutch to engage poorly and might have burned it up faster... or they could have just taken a barely working one out of a junkyard place, or may have gotten the wrong one! just guessing though, get that clutch checked out pronto!

Clutch is definitely slipping... either a worn disc already, or perhaps they didn't machine the flywheel while they were at it, so the disc has no grip. Either way, get it checked out, it's not supposed to do that :)

I think i am having the same problem.... I also have a 1991 nissan 240sx hatchback and i just bought it, but before i did the guy said the clutch was shipping and would have it replaced. So he did and i have the paperwork and everything that he had thw work done. On my way home from buying it the clutch was working great, but once i got off the freeway the car started slowing down and would rev really high in first gear and i wouldbt be moving much, then i wasnt moving at all. It seemed as if every gear i put it in was just neutral. After i let the car sit i decided i would try it again and it started up and moving, but about every 15 mins or so i drive it the same thing happens...

Well, I took the car back to the seller and he just adjusted the clutch at the pedal again. Presto - no more clutch problems. Seems , he says, there was too much pressure and the clutch would literally not engage the flywheel. Works like a champ now. Thanks to you all for the possible diagnosis'.
