My 1990 V-6 Maxima starts (not so easy) but when I put it in gear it slowly dies. It feels like the engine is being chocked to the point of stalling. I thought it might be timeing belt but the car does start. Any one have any ideas.

thanks

Is the check engine light on?

How many miles on the car (and how many miles since the last timing belt change)?

What happens if you leave it in neutral or park and rev it?

as for the check engine light when you first turn the key to on does the check engine light come on b/c his bulb might blown out for the check engine light when you go to turn the key and all the panel illuminates completely see if you can see the check engine light come on and go away. if it doesnt come on pull the codes

i am actually having the same problem. I am getting ready to replace the cat cause the car had over 300k when the motor blew. the new one has about 97k but it ahs run funny after the first few days or replacing it. the only CEL i kicked was the speed sensor which I messed up when I put the engine and transmission back in. It sits in gear though and will sputter and die. neutral runs great though right?

It's not a VQ, it's a 1990. If my memory serves me, that's a VG.

Yes, that's right. '90 is a VG with a belt, not a chain.

What's your ID on 502SS? There's quite a few Louisville NICO members. Do you have a 5sp or an automatic? If it's an AT, then I may have a used VSS for you. Did you replace the EGR when you swapped motors?

Apologies to the OP for the thread-jack.

check the plugs and make sure that the IACV and throttle body are nice and clean.
