I have experienced below, at least two times on my 2002 QX4:

I used the spare key in the plastic card (like a credit card) to charge my hand held GPS, and lock the door so that I could leave the car safely when the GPS is being charged inside.

After a while, I unplug the GPS, removed the spare key, and put in the regular key (with chip) to start the car, it only turns but engine would not start. I took the key out and put it back in, it started as if there is nothing happened. This car drives nearly like the first day I bought it new.

Anyone has experienced this?

Nope never experienced that.... you think its happening from the spare? I have my main key on a detachable keyring with the remote on the other part of the keyring.... so when i need to do what you described, I simply separate the key from remote, leave key in ignition, and lock doors with remote... this also activates the alarm so if the windows are open and someone reaches in to unlock, it'll start honking...

You could try that, i havent had any problems yet, great for leaving AC on!

well i do know that if you put a key that has a chip thats not recognized in the ignition and turn it to the run position, then take it out and try to start it with a good key, it will turn over but not start. thats just the vehicles PATS system doing its job. you can either disconnect the battery or let it sit for a couple minutes with the ignition off to reset. i found this out in depth while working on getting the remote starter to work.

I am not sure if this glitch is from the factory or from myself. However, since it does not happen every time, and the car will start, I can live with it no problem.

Thanks fueler for the reply.

I just sent one post out before I saw timmack's reply. If it's the feature of security design, then I feel much better. No wonder it does not happen every time, because most times I don't drive after charging is finished.

Thanks timmack.

I don't know about the 2002 models, but on the older QX4's there is a simple mod that can be done so the rear 12V socket is live all the time. This would eliminate the need to leave your keys in the car.

i personally am going to rig mine so that the 12V outlet inside the center console stays on with the ignition off, as i want to be able to charge my ipod without the key in.

It's a simple mod to have the plug in the center console on all the time. You take apart one of the relays under the hood and force it on all the time. I did it in 5 mins with a business card. There's a thread on it here somewhere. Indispensable for charging stuff or having the kids tv's seperated from the switch allowing them to pause when we stop for gas.

I've been meaning to get around to it forever. If I do it soon, I'll write it up complete with pics. It shouldn't take 20 minutes from start to finish.

That's all there was for the earlier QX4 models. It's the only Mod I've made. I've been meaning to do the fog light mod, but haven't gotten around to it. It's more complicated.
