Hi guys, I'm new to this car club, but I've owned my 1991 240sx SE for 5 years. I bought it in Feb. 1999. It had 101,000 miles on it when I bought it, it now has 196,000 miles. Anyways, I'm having a problem with my car stalling when I stop, in fact it just dies when I take my foot off the gas and apply the break and clutch. Also, I'm running rich on the fuel because I'm getting some ****ty gas milage and there's black smoke coming from my tailpipe. Sometimes it will hold an idle, but now if I can get it to idle it just bounces between 100-900 rpm. I think something is wrong with the fuel air mixture. I read on this forum a while back that it may be the air intake valve and that it may be clogged and need cleaning. Also I havn't had the fuel injectors cleaned since I've owned the car, not sure this would be the problem. Today I replaced the fuel filter, oil and oil filter. Didn't help the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!!!--Redduke--

I had an '89 Nissan Sentra with that same problem. Not sure if the 91 240sx has one, but my Sentra had a bad TPS (throttle positioning sensor/switch). It would idle way rough, bounce up and done, and sometimes just die when I took my foot off the gas. It's a 60-80 dollar fix.

honestly, before you replace anything, my best advice would be to get down to a mechanic and have him pull your codes, if any. the ****ty thing about the 240sx is the absence of a 'check engine' light. that **** really chaps my ***. anyway, see if a mechanic can pull some codes from your ecu. if there's ANYTHING related to throttle positioning sensor, idle air control valve, or EGR, my guess would be it's your TPS. ALL of those codes were pulled on my 89 sentra for a TPS problem.

hope this helps.

clean or remove the aiv, use the search button to find more on the subject as well as the 240sx.org faq. this should point you in the right direction. i had the same problem in the same year car.

91 240sx runs a ka24de, should have a check engine light, have the codes pulled or pull them yourself (i can post the manual code retreval if you like)

Check your air intake pipe between the maf and the throttle body(after the filter) Poss "false air intrusion" ie, vac leak, unmetered air entering engine can cause some idle concerns....

that is if your still running a stock air intake system.

does it happen all the time? or only once warmed up?could be coolant temp sensor related (dumping fuel to try and warm engine up)

could be as simple as a dirty maf sensor....

Check your basics, depending on your knowledge or ability....

If you can pinpoint a little more I'll be able to point you in a direction....

I know this thread is crazy old, but I was just curious if you ever figured it out. I'm having what sounds like the exact same problem on my '92 (same mileage). bad gas mileage, smoke, stalling, RPM bouncing. My ECU threw an 'injector leak' code once, but hasnt since.

I haven't figured out how to get the fuel rail 100% off, so if there's a chance that's not the problem, please tell me what IS the problem. :D thanks!

had the same problem in my 91 240 hatch

it was the MAF

got a little better after cleaning... but a replacement was definitely better

if you want.. i still have the MAF that i replaced it with .

worked perfect when i took it off. (this is the MAF i bought to replace my bad one)

it's off a 92 i believe

lmk.. $60 shipped to you

im about 95% sure thats going to solve your problem.. but dont hold me to it =p
