Ok, I've been getting this car back into shape and I'm almost satisfied except this reoccuring smoke problem. Before I get into details let me stress that the car runs really strong. After doing the timing, plugs, cap and rotor, and a 300 zx fuel filter, I am very impressed with the acceleration of the motor. It is (supposedly) a '93 ka24de into my '91. The swap looks pretty clean except they removed a bunch of emmisions type stuff (EGR, maybe AIV). The pipe coming off of the exhaust manifold is crimped up tight. I will also be putting in a new O2 sensor when it arrives :sopadope!Ok, so basically on some days, when the car idles for a bit at a light or whatever, when I take off there will be a nice puff (or sometimes cloud) of white smoke. Now when I first saw it I said white smoke=oil. But my levels have remained steady through all of this. Also if there were a bad gasket or whatever, would it smoke all the time? Again it only happens when the car idles for a bit, or when I drive really slow through a parking lot or something where I'm on and off the clutch in 1st gear. My bro suggested a valve seal might do this, weeping a little oil here and there. Also, the idle is steady...it was high (1200) but I adjusted the idle screw and it will drop down to 750 or so after about 3 seconds at a stop. My inital feeling (hope) was that it was fuel. The car was without cat for a bit until I had my high flow welded in...the effect was lessened for a while but it returned with a vengence last night after slowly cruising a parking lot for 5 min or so....ok, that about all I can think of - your suggestions?Edit: just got done testing out my new all seasons in the rain. Drove it hard for a half an hour and no smoke whatsoever.

White smoke doesn't mean burnt oil, it means burnt coolant.

Burning oil = Blue smokeBurning coolant = White smoke with sweet smellRunning rich = Black smoke

Therefore, check your coolant levels, and smell your exhaust for sweetness.

Is your car overheating at all? If so, the headgasket is probably the culprit.

Does your oil look milky?

I hear some 240's have a throttle body coolant system, whereby coolant is run somewhere around the throttle plate to prevent it from freezing. Check this out.

oooh, good stuff. I am having some coolant issues. I have a small crack in the plastic endtank and I'll be replacing the radiator next week. The throttle body is definately the culprit! It's been sticking shut, even after a few cleanings with some carb cleaner. Plus it seems like the worst puffs of smoke come when the TB sticks shut for a long time at idle. I was planning on pulling it off when I did the radiator so I will investigate. Can anyone outline some procedure from the FSM or something for checking this out?Edit: the cars hasn't overheated but it has run warm a few times when enough water evaporateed out of the radiator crack...

Did the car run warm with the person who had it before you?

He's says no and he's been pretty straight with me...it never ran warm until I noticed the crack in the endtank, which I beleive I did myself when I spun the car out (hehe). And it's only done it twice, with the temp needle just above the middle line as opposed to just under it, it never got really hot.I will be changing the oil too and I should be able to see if there's coolant in there....just from the dipstick it looks ok.

My '91 engine did that...

It is due to the valve stem seals leaking....

Nothing to major....

My 93 was running hot on and off, loosing coolant and engine was rough etc... , turned out to be head gasket. get it checked out.

When I blew a turbo seal, and was leaking oil into my exhaust stream, the smoke was white.
