Is is safe to get my engine shampooed? There is a lot of grease under my hood and would like to get it cleaned up but not damage any sensors or electrical components. What products are safe to use? Not sure if the garage's use a spray or do by hand.

No there is no leaks just a lot of road grime I want to get off. Is these a degreaser that you would recommend to do this by hand?

oven cleaner, wd-40, simple green, etc.
i woudnt touch electrical or plastic components with anything other than something like simple green. simple green is also known as the 'THING' to use to clean brake caliper pistons. it doesnt harm the rubber seals for the caliper pistons, so i dont see it causing harm to plastics in the engine bay.

How about DP engine degreaser? Eco friendly and made for cleaning stuff under the hood.

I am always cleaning the engine bay whenever I wash my car. It is as celan as day one. If you never open the hood for two years, and one day you realize it is dirty, It is not something unexpected right?

I will try the Simple Green hopefully it will not fade or damage the plastic. Can this be used on the rubber hoses as well?

yes, simple green is great on rubber. that's why its used by everyone when cleaning brake calipers. (brake calipers have rubber hoses, rubber seals, and its absolutely CRUCIAL to not use products that will regrade rubber.)

Well I finally got my engine bay clean today. I ended up using Spray Nine instead as I heard Simple Green may damage the paint around the hood. It took me 4 hrs and had to spray it about 6 times. I had about half and inch of grease built up under my hood. I think this was actually put on when the dealer rust proofed it. It turned out pretty good and I will post some pics later.

mac , I'm lucky not to have too much of heavy grease buildup because number one I'm always wiping around an area that I'm wrenching on , and if nearby has that "sweat of grease" I'll wipe it too. We get beuacoup dust & sand here so a car shampoo for me , don't really like any degreasers even (concerned with el. connectors) Is that I use finest garden hose spray - we got great 80psi !!!! at the spicket round here.I'll have the motor warmed , 4min. - not HOT. So water drys very fast..... in Desert :rotfl
That kind of "cutting-mist" quickly knocking off surface dust -that's it for me. :spitout:

Maybe I live life on the edge, but my QX4 was nasty under the hood. I sprayed it all over with Gunk Degreaser and sprayed the heck out of it with my water hose in the driveway. I did the same thing with my Mitsubishi Endeavor. I ended up not having any issues. Maybe I got lucky so I'm not endorsing you do it - I'm just saying I did it and it worked.

I use Gunk brand engine degreaser. Spray it on while the engine is hot then head over to the car wash and hit it with the power sprayer. Been doing this for 20+ years on cars and never had a problem.
