I recently purchased a 2004 G35x and the engine, cover is very very dirty/dusty. Does anyone have any info on what is needed to be covered or bagged prior to shampooing the engine. I have done this in other engines, but do not want to risk damaging any of the electronics.

Shampoo?
I use Castorol Super Clean degreaser.
I stuff plastic grocery bags into the air intake before spraying her down.
Afterwards, I take the intake apart and dry it.
I also spray down the car good before opening the hood and again afterwards to dilute any overspray.

Cover the altenator with a bag for sure. It wont hurt it but i'd still try to keep it dry. Also after washing i personally like to let it dry for a while (overnight) on a warm night before starting it again.

I've never covered anything else.
I also never spray a hard spray either.
I put my nozzle on shower as opposed to jet.
Normally, I wash mine early in the AM on a day when I'm going to wash the exterior too.
You want to do this with a cold engine.
I keep the hood open and let it dry some. Also use a towel to dry it off some too.

I wouldn't spray the engine. I believe the engine cover comes off so why not remove it and then clean it.

Or just take a damp rag & wipe it down.

I think spraying water into an engine compartment is asking for trouble.
But hey thats just me.

Never try to fix anything that isn't broke

Telcoman is right!! If all you want to do is clean the top cover!! :dblthumb:

I've never encountered any issues cleaning my engine bays the way that I do it.
And, I like a clean engine bay!! :yesnod
I also degrease the bottom of the engines from time to time and I always use a high pressure sprayer to hose off the underside of my car especially after we've had snow and the salt crap they put on the roads.

However, I do have a neighbor that says it did mess up the spark plugs in his F150

I never clean the engine compartment. I like the fact that oily vapors cover and lubricate everything and it also keep things from corroding. I do however drag an oscillating garden sprinkler under the car when I wash her in the winter to remove salt. I'm old-school and do not like paying to get my car washed. My clothes washer room is next to the garage so I can connect my garden hose to the hot water of the washer, for winter car washes. I can't wait for things to warm up a bit.
