so I'm running really rich in my s13, I replaced the 02 sensor and it helped alot but you can still smell it in the air that I'm running rich and flames are shooting out of my exhaust with ridiculously loud backfires. I've searched and read all of the causes , so I decided to go with getting the ecu to spit out a code. I forget the brand but it couldn't read it and it reads everyone elses ecu just fine with the exception of this like 04 wrx. I was wondering if the ecu could be a culprit ?

#1. Replace your coolant temperature sensor. Should be easy and cheap.(The fact that you say it's worse when you first start it up make me think that it's the CTS.)

If that doesn't work:#2. Unplug your maf, you can only get to like 2k rpms but see if it runs any better. If it does then you know it's the MAF.

If that doesn't work:#3. Pull all of your plugs.See if one looks way darker/blacker then the other. If so you probably have a stuck/leaky injector.

If that doesn't work:Post to let us know and I'll think of some more stuff.

yeh before I fixed the o2 sensor all of my plugs looked the same all fouled equally ase much, I'll replace the temp sensor as soon as I get done moving my stuff to my new house that sounds lik it could be it with the maf unplugged I can revv to where ever I want too I just have a jumpy idle. I believe its my ecu since it wont spit a code I'm gonna switch mine out with my parts car to see if that help.s thanks alot I'll check into it

Dude you car isn't obd II it isn't going to spit an error code most of the time something is wrong.

I.E. I had overgapped my spark plugs once and it was randomly missing on 1 cylinder and I threw no code.

Only a piss poor mechanic relies on engine codes.

If it doesn't run rich with your MAF unplugged I'd try a replacement MAF.

haha I don't really know **** about the whole obdII and obdI i just know in nc I dont have to pass a smog test thats all I really keep up with. the plugs are new and there gapped fine . it could be a vaccumn leak somewhere because its really shaky at idle the shifter will bob around and you can feel the car moving. it wasn't like this when I bought it a few months ago. I idle at 700 but every then and again it will start and die off and I'll have to give it hell to start back up this happens every 2 months or so compression is 175 on all four cylinders completley stock minus air filter on the stock tubing. it throws flames in the upper rpms anywhere from 4-6 grand.

EDIT for to mention new wires distributor cap and rotor motor has only seen synthetic oil 5w 30. it wouldn't just not spit a code it wouldn't even connect with the ecu it kept coming up with an error. car had subs from original owner someone stole them from dude ripped all the wiring and some of my interior **** doesn't work. IE light dimming switch climate control lights.

mine ended up being a vaccumn leak at the very back of the motor one of the hoses that are hard to find I came across it when I put a new clutch in it was connected still but it had a rip in it and was hard to see my car idles and has ran great since

If u unplug ur temp sensor does the rpms rise. When my temp sensor was bad the rpms would stay the same but now if I unplug it the rpms they rise up and plug back in goes back to normal. So check that.

Check hoses, especially around the fuel pressure regulator. If the hose is cracked and sees no vacuum, you will be running as much fuel pressure as you do at WOT.
