1997 240SX

So I searched this forum and I came across http://www.240sx.org on how to see what code the ECU would spit out. Well my problem is that those have been written for a 1991 and a 1995 240sx and I can't seem to be able to get to my ECU, I took of the plastic shield and I saw what I thought was the ecu, now those FAQ's talk about there being like 2 screws to take out, So i took 2 screws out and then I cant take it out, so I find a 3rd one which is not mentioned in that FAQ and I still cant take it out. Maybe Im not getting the ecu out at all maybe its something else. I think there was a sticker on it that said J-6 Is there a tool I can use for that so I don't have to go through that pain in the butt process?I searched on google and found nothing that might help me.Everythign seems normal when I drive no weird noises or anything no loss of power. What could it be?

Yes its called a Consult test, go to a Nissan dealer they can do it for you. Probably for a few bucks.

Or you can buy software to do it yourself called Nprobe/Conzult($$)

There are three things holding the S14 ECU in. Two screws and a nut. one is at the bottem right corner of the dash. One is below the ECU. The nut is against the firewall.

Okay I finally got to the ECU and managed to get 2 codes from it. The 1st one is 59, Don't know what the hell that means. The 2nd one is 37 which according to the information posted on 240sx.org it's closed loop. I've been looking around here to see what that means. Any help? As what it may be causing them? I reset the ECU so we'll see if it comes back eventually.

Have not seen a code 59, but the 37 is your O2 sensor

How can I figure out if it's the front 02 sensor or the rear?

Go to Autozone and ask for a free ECU scan.

Like I say, never seen a code 59.

37 is front closed loop for O2

0509 is not listed in the 96 FSM....maybe someone with a 97 can confirm?0307 is listed as open loop control, front heated o2 sensor(just like some others said)

no, the problem is either you are reading the codes wrong or doing the ecu diagnostic wrong.

Autozone has a code reader which can output codes easier and with little chance of error.

No code 59, checked the FSM entirely.

ok, but this is how I do my ECU diagnostic, I turn the key to the on position in the egnition, then I take the ecu and turn the little flathead looking screw all the way clockwise and wait for 2-5 seconds, then I turn it back and I look at the engine service light, 1st it blinks 5 times really fast and then slowly 9 times code 59? right, then the 2nd code blinks fast 3 times and then 7 times slowly. After that I just turn it back clockwise and wait 2-5 seconds then turn it back counterclockwise, this puts me back in normal mode right, this resets the ecu? I tried the turn on and off stuff with the engine but it never reseted that way. Next time it comes up im gonna see if autozone gives me a free ecu error scan.

Thats correct, there is a 0905 code = Crank P/S (OBD) Cog

I think you were reading the codes backwards

got back from autozone these are the codes the ecu spit out.

P0440P0446 they said it was the EVAC.

Huh?

I also have the opportunity to buy a 1998 FSM, should I buy it, even though i have a 97? Any major changes taken place in the 2 cars?

P0440 - Evap Control System (Small Leak)P0446 - Evap Canister Vent Control Valve

Tighten your fuel cap and or check the EVAP system

Your car will run ok w/ the codes

Still not sure how your ECU diag came out with those non-relevant codes.

You can try to fix it yourself, the instructions are in the FSM.

If you bring it in, prepare to get raped for a couple hundred or more.

I suggest 97 for 97, you can download it for free from this board, do a search for FSM download.

I went to my mechanic and he found the failing parts, He said he would need to replace the EVAP Canister and the EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve. Parts are 200 and he says he'll do it for 275.Now I went and found this out on the service bulletin that both these parts are on it. #17 and 19. Do you think I can just go to nissan and have these replaced for free due to the recall?

Get your VIN number and call 1800Nissan and ask if the recall was ever done for your car.

If not, Nissan corporate can probably arrange something.

A TSB is different than a "recall".
