Engine Rod Noise on a 1989 240sx SE (Automatic)

How can you tell if the engine rods are going bad, is it a noticeable sound or is it something that you need to hear with a stethoscope.

Oh you'll sure as **** hear it. Sounds like a midget in your oil pan taking a hammer to your block.

haha yeah that's what it sounds like. But by that time your f'd. Sometimes it's a very gradual thing and will get worse over time. Mine had a rod knock for a year before it went, then my current 240 went in a matter of seconds. It sounds like a cross between timing chain guide noises and valve ticking, and louder. Before it gets real bad anyway.
