So I just removed the engine, trans, and front cross member from my g50 parts car and found no easy way of pulling the engine my car. Is it possible to pull the engine out the top without the trans or is it better with the trans attached?

Also is there any difference in the trans from my 92 and the trans from the 95? Or is all the difference in the TCU? In other words will simply installing the 95 TCU in my car get me the 1st gear start? I have a complete harness I have everything to make my car a 95 so Im trying to firgure out what is the easiest way to go about installing and what exactly will be needed from the other car.

Thanks

Ray

Engine is designed to be removed from the bottom.

I think it can be removed from the top, but just barely.

TCU and first two gear ratios different on the 1995.

it's possible to remove the engine from the top. but you will break something. there is like 10mm clearance on the front and firewall when you take the engine out from the top and you definitely have to take the transmission off.

you'll also need to remove the radiator, condenser and most components from the engine bay. it is alot easier and the correct way to remove it from the bottom.

So we had fun... 8 hours in total but the engine is out!!!! trans, engine, and cross member! Talk about an undertaking! Since it seams that all the engine mounts but one are broke and I know they are broken at the wrecking yards so the only place to buy them is at the dealer we are going to fab up some solid mounts to replace those viscous ones. That was a ton of work and Im going to go pass out now! So yeah through the bottom.

Solid mounts not good except for track.

Well seeing as I have seen almost every one of these cars with at least 1 broken mount there seems to be a design flaw. Honestly if the mount is giving out at less than 80K miles there is a problem. The worst thing that could happen is what?... engine vibration into the chassis? We arent concerned with that to much. Those viscus mounts are cool if this was going to be a car to drive around old ppl or used as a transport business car but its a grocery/family car. At least we will know when the car is running a little extra rough. Its not like anything is going to vibrate loose either. Everything is attached 3 times over what it really needs to be in most cases. Talk about over engineered!

We came up with some really simple clean mounts. We cut the ends off the broken mounts cleaned them up and welded a peice of steel tube in the place of the rubber section. This car will never have to worry about a mount replacement in its lifetime! The VH45 is a very smooth engine except if it has a problem and then the harmonics go all out of wack.

Ill report back with any findings one way or the other.

Couple weeks agoI removed one from the top with the transmission attached. Yes, you have to be careful. I still broke the center strip of the pass side valve cover. Removed the radiator & hood, but not the condensor.

One thing that really helps is the tilt tool so you can change the angle of the engine as the cherry picker lifts the engine out.
