Well, just when i thought i was gonna waste the whole week piddling around, a guy i know loaned me his pickup truck so i could rent an engine hoist and yank my motor. I returned the hoist and the truck (with a full tank of gas and a car wash, i was so happy he let me use it) and got to work on tearing the motor apart.

So far ive gotten the water pump, altenator, power steering pump, thermostat housing, and a lot of misc brackets for holding said stuff on. Looking at the intake manifold, i think i can remove it complete with the plenum and injectors and fuel rail intact, which would be a GREAT relief, since i probably wont be pulling all that stuff apart.

I got some pics, but dont have any way to post them. Some are funny (my chevy camaro driving friend Joey standing on the car trying to lift it out with his bare hands!) and some are just documented. Either way, this is WAAAAY COOOOL!!

I just need to get the cylinder head off so i can measure the combustion chamber volume so JE can forge me some 10.5:1 pistons for use with stock rods and cylinder head. Its gonna be a BEAST when i'm done! Even Joey thinks its cool (even tho it aint a V8).

Many thanks to nothingwrong for the help too, even tho he doesnt CURRENTLY own a 240, he still wants one!

My timing chain guide came off in about 3-5 peices, 2 still bolted to the block and the rest floating around in the oil pan. Im soooo glad im rebuilding this car. She had 190,000 miles on her. In a few months the plan is to sell my 85 Porsche 944 and get my own place (i currently live with my brother), so my car will BRAND NEW again!!

My newest problem is i need to remove the flywheel and i have no impact wrench. I cannot remove the crank w/o pulling the flywheel. I forsee a trip to the machine shop just for this in the near future.

Moderator drjohn was SUPER KIND enough to check the cc's of a 90 model at work for me, so i dont have to do that now. I can order my new pistons and in about 4 weeks, put my baby back together again.

Oh yea, and i broke the dipstick tube off the block. It wouldnt come off at all!! So now i have to get a new one. :(

Good luck on your new project. that was one of my options that i was thinking about, an engine rebuild. i was thinking either SR, CA, of a beast of a N/A KA. Higher compression pistons, ITB, bigger cams, etc. lots of good stuff.

why not go with 11:1 compression? sounds like your doing real good though, good luck. can't you rent an air compressor/impact gun from somewhere? that would make everything much easier and faster.

Ok this is really starting to piss me off! I called back the company ( http://www.flatlanderracing.com if interested) with the cylinder head combustion chamber volume like requested (after drjohn cc'd it for me at work and let me know via this forum). NOW they need me to fill out a custom piston order form (located here: http://www.jepistons.com/pdf/c...m.pdf if anyone could help). All i know is that everything else is going to be STOCK dimensions EXCEPT the bore (now 90mm up from 89mm) and the compression (now 10.5:1, up from 8.6:1)! I dont know what half of that stuff means!! Could anyone PLEASE HELP ME?!?!

Just another small update:

I pulled the flywheel off Tuesday. My brother had an electric impact wrench in the trunk of his car that i wasnt sure worked or not. It did. Thank God! Now the crank, rear plate and rear main seal can all come out.

Thursday I dropped my block, crank, pistons w/rods, and cylinder head (complete with my Nismo cam) off at the machine shop today. He's going to do all the measurements for the new pistons for me. He's also going to clean up the block, bore and hone it, and check my cylinder head for cracks, then clean it up, and change my valve stem seals. I should get the measurements back Monday.

Today (Sat) i went to Pep Boys to get some more engine degreaser and carb cleaner. The last 2 days ive been tearing the intake manifold apart anyways and cleaning it up and changing out the gaskets. A friend reminded me that i need to get a new timing chain kit, so while i was at Pep Boys i look at one. Then i bought it. So i get home, check Flatlander's website again, and lo and behold i was supposed to get one with my rebuild kit. So now i have to take back the kit to Pep Boys (saves me $90 tho!) and email Flatlander about this. Ive cleaned up the front cover and replaced both the front main and rear main seals already.

In all its going good. I just cant WAIT to get it all back together again and drive it! I know its going to be awesome!

Well its been a while since my last update, but JE is shipping out my new pistons today! I should receive them in 5-7 days. This is AWESOME news!!

Ive done some much to the car with it just sitting there in my driveway. Ive changed my blown out T/C bushings for new Nismo ones. Ive installd my Nismo Power Bar 2. I found my sway bar was attached on on the passanger side so i got new bolts for hte drivers side. Just these alone will make a night and day difference in the car. I rewired my HKS Super AFR. Since i got my FSM, i learned that i had the air flow meter signal wire hooked up to the power wire from the air flow meter, NOT to the signal wire. That might have explained why i ran so rich all the time. Everything is cleaned up and i've painted a couple of things. I have all new vacuum hoses on my intake manifold. Ive cleaned up all the rust from the battery tray, sealed it up, and painted it flat black.

I cant wait, im so excited!

You are obviously excited, as well you should be - you are basically doing all of the work. Once complete you always feel much more pride in your vehicle when you spent the time (and $) working on it. Yes, you can pay someone to build an engine for you...but, if you have the time and the patience, the end, in this case, doesn't justify the means.

I bought my Corvette with 29K miles on the odometer - ran perfectly...really enjoyed the car. I spent an entire year striping it down to the frame and replacing/rebuilding/upgrading everything. Now I love it.

My Nissan - bought it to be a cheap daily driver (which it is). However, I've removed/checked/replaced (if needed) everything on the car (keeping it OEM). I enjoy driving it...I also clean the engine compartment and undercarriage with only a toothbrush, simple green, and paper towels :rolleyes but that really has nothing to do with this topic.

Bottom Line - Enjoy working on your car, don't get frustrated if problems pop up along the way...it's what gives you great stories to tell when finished - Example: "So I had the engine completely assembled, was hoisting it over the car to drop in, and wouldn't you know, I dropped the enire thing on the shock tower...bent everything!" :D

Have fun,Dave
