Hey guys, I had a post earlier about doing an engine swap on my 89 300zx but the stupid guy sold the engine underneath me. So I have decided to rebuild my engine. I need some advice to where I can get a GOOD engine rebuild kit for my car. I want just a stock or factory rebuild kit, no high performance ones. I want to keep my car a stock as possible. Thank you guys!!!!

I'm not too well versed in the Z31 but I'll give it a try, generally if you are looking for reliability as your #1 concern I would try to stick with all OEM parts, if those aren't available I would say try to steer toward renowned aftermarket companies, also, and again as I am not too well versed with the VG30E you should do some research and find out which parts on your engine are shared with the other 30Es as this engine was put into tons of vehicles in the 80s and early 90s and lots of parts are transplantable so it may open the aftermarket or oem supply a bit more. GL.

I moved this to the Z31 area. What does "rebuild" mean to you? how much of the work are you doing yourself? Do you have a good machine shop? Some machine shops want the short block and heads separately, some would prefer crack open the long block themselves. Some will tear down the complete motor (at a cost) others simply will not mess with a dressed motor. You need to decide on your machine shop and talk to them. They might have a brand of gaskets they prefer, or simply won't use the parts you bring.

I am going to be doing alot of the work myself. I have a good machine shop that I have been going to for years, and I trust them.

Great, how do they want it? Will they or you do the assembly work? Do they have a favorite bang for rebuild kits? When I did my VG30ET I just did a ring and bearing job, no machine work, I used felpro parts. My reason for rebuilding that particular motor was the thrust bearing, thats why I didn't do any machine work. When I Built my VG30DETT I took the short block to the machine shop as i had a rod knocking and the rod journal at least needed to be polished and I needed to make sure the rod had not stretched. They assembled the rotating assembly and I used fel pro again to put ti all back together.

I will be doing the assembly work myself with some help from a few people in my 300 club as wee. None of the guys I know have done this before, I seen a couple kits out there with new pistons and rings, just by using google. I going to do a little bit more research on each site to see what all the kits comes with and how they compare and prices as well.

If your cylinder bores are within spec and there is no damage to your pistons you can reuse your stock pistons unless you want forged pistons for a high power build. Bearings again, if there is no knock or spun bearings standards should do fine. Your best bet si to strip down to the short block and take it to the machine shop, they can take it the rest of the way and let you know if you'll need to oversize anything, then you can order the parts you need.
