Me and my 240 sx have been through a lot and I want to get my engine rebuilt. I have a 90 Nissan 240sx SE s13 ka24e 5 speed. How much do you guys think I would be looking at to have the cylinder head and block rebuilt if I take it out and install it myself? Would it be better just to buy a refurbished engine? What do you guys think and if anybody in the area of LA, Santa Barbara, or Ventura can recommend a good machine shop that woule be cool. THANKS!!!

A rebuild if you tear down the engine and have a machine shop do the internals will run around $1400 to $2000 If you take the engine out and dont tear it down it'l be a bit more. You can get a long block already build for around $2500

I'm currently rebuilding a spare engine for my 240, also KA24E, and the total so far has been about $1300, but most of it has been machine work. A valve job along with new valve guides, polishing crank journals, rod inspection, and hot tank / hone block cost me about $800, and the rest has been in parts.

If you're mechanically inclined (or up for a project) then you can do it yourself. Get a rebuild kit and have the shop fit you new bearings and rings. Also, download yourself a copy of the FSM and follow the rebuilding instructions.

I was thinking about buying a refurbished cylinder head for $329 from an autoparts store and just getting the block rebuilt. After getting the cylinders hone how hard is it to install new pistons and other random parts? I don't know that much about cars, but I was able to remove everything down to the cylinder head and decided to start saving up money.

If you are really not mechanically inclined chances are you dont posses the tools to do this job properly. There is alot of measuring with precision tools that needs to be done. I think for you if you want a trouble free rebuild it would be best to let a machine shop set up your lower end on this engine. Ask questions of the machinest and observe what they do [ if your able] .You could slap the head on it yourself but I recommend you get a factory service manual and follow the torq sequences carfully, read through all important notes and most importantly pay close attention to timing chain set up so you dont bend valves.

a good idea for the hobbiest is to get another motor from the junkyard for like $600 and slap it in. have your car done in a weekend. then you have a spare to tinker with.
