long story short. I have a KA24e that was taken apart without the #1 cly. at TDC so I need to know the proper prcedure for putting an engine back together. nothing has been taken out of the block just the head was taken off for headgasket replacement and the machine shop took the head apart to clean and mill it. I am replacing the timing chain, oil and water pump, ream main seal. The engine is out of the car and on a stand. I just need to know how to rotate or to what position, does it matter the head has been taken apart, cam position? Please help!

Set the crank to the tdc mark on the block, set the cams at tdc according to their marks, install chain, and go, if you need more help than that then have someone else do it. Timing is one of the most easy things to do and one of the easiest things to screw up... good luck. If you had searched as you said you had then you would have found the threads I found that detailed this procedure. Search "KA24DE timing". Look through the threads...

There's the factory service manuals. It shows you the correct step by step directions for rebuilding the entire engine.

If you don't have a 1991 to 1994 all the factory service manuals are located here zerothread/253879

Carefully read though everything, it's easy to forget or over look things, like I almost missed the fact that the piston ring gaps have to be pointed at particular directions, also some rings have an up direction and a down direction.

Go to http://www.KA-T.org/forums. Then search engine rebuild. I followed a step by step walk through on how to do a DOHC rebuild and it has tons of pictures and everything. I havent looked for the SOHC, but I'm sure they have one. When I tried doing it with the FSM on here I got pissed because the correct info wasnt in the correct location. Timeing... Tourqe spec..... stuff like that.
