I am in the process of disassembling my motor and found that the head bolts require a hex bit socket? Is this unusual for head bolts?

Standard Nissan head bolt 10 mm hex. You will need to order new head bolts when you disassemble your engine. I would recommend ARP which uses 12 point 12mm head bolt.
