Hey guys, I've had my '04 g35 for just over 3 months now, and I've noticed my oil consumption has been.. rather high (1L/3000km). I'm putting her away for the winter and have been contemplating re-doing the rings. I've also read that the valve guide seals could be a likely culprit for oil loss.

Has anyone gone down this route? I'm looking for some advice on how I should go about this.. mechanically this isn't an issue, I have the know-how and tools to get the job done. I have yet to do a leak down or compression test. Is there anything I'm missing?

As a sidenote, I just noticed the sticky about using group V esther based oils, as I am currently using MM full synth 5w-30, anyone have experience with this oil(MM)?

p.s. Hope this isn't a zerothread?id=324923.

Cheers!Josh

Do you have a Rev up engine? How many miles are on your car?

There is a oil consumption issue with some of the engines that were put in our cars and they can be replaced under warranty if you are consuming enough oil.

You can do a search on this and read up more on it.

'04 VQ35DE. I am aware of the consumption issue, bought the car used, no warranty. Something to do with the oil control ring. The motor has 131km's on it now, and I'm just curious to know if anyone has had their engine apart to address the issues themselves(the mechanically inclined).

I thought this through a little more, and I've come the conclusion that I may just buy a cooked long-block and rebuild (with some nicer parts). I'd much rather have a working engine in any case. A nice little project for the winter! :D

that sounds like a fun project!

I've seen working engines pulled from G's that were going for $500, of course it would cost a penny to ship it

Yeah, definately. Shipping shouldn't be an issue.. I live just east of Toronto, I'm sure I could find a wrecked altima/maxima/murano/350/etcetc

We've got a lot of junk yards in a 200-300km radius, should be an easy find. I'll resurrect this thread once I find a suitable specimen.. lol.

Make sure the VQ from the FWD cars is the same as the one from the RWD. I have a feeling there is a difference.

i'll take some pictures on monday or maybe tomorrow if i feel up to it.

Now as for re ringing the block on a VQ i don't recommend it personally if you wanna go with piece of mind i would get another short block or long block if you wish build the hell out of it make sure its done right i don't recommend what i call a "hone and bone" on these engines. I only do that on old Chevy motors or if i need the car to make 4 passes down the track before i destroy the ring lands.

i have a suggestion for you if you want a built block at a decent cost and someone who KNOWS what thier doing

http://www.justiceracingengines.com

he has been building motors for ages, and has progressed with time and is huge in the import scene look at some of the fastest fwd all motor and turbo cars in the world and you will most likley see his sticker there also on the front of the profwd cobalt piloted by jason hunt. I have a friend who used to work for jim and he can vouch for his work and his skill and customer service and jim will actually be sleeving my block once i find a long block for this piece of **** car i have haha.

He has built a ton of the VQ's as well for numerous race teams and shops who install them. Great running motors once hes done and he is very flexable to work with. Pictures of a VQ are on his site as well.

Also if your doing the rebuild pleaseeeeeeee don't plastigauge that makes me cry

I would never!! Hehe. Still haven't had much time to look for a long block, but i'm sure to find a lot more fwd variants than rwd's.. Would love to hear back on what the motormount/accessory/manifold differences are!

What is wrong with plastiguage ? How else are You going to measure rod and main bearing clearances ? Before You pull that old engine out, try switching back to a petroleum based oil.Synthetic oil is slippery enough to leak past everything.
