timing chain rattle at cold startup is very, very common among VQ's. Its a very costly fix if you arent doing the work yourself, BUT most VQ owners just deal with the rattle

Welcome to NICO, emile.

'Tiger' is right and is common with VQ engines. A good dose of fuel system cleaner - Redline/BG44K/Gumout Regane/Techron and true synthetic oil in your next oil change may reduce the rattle on cold start up.

many thanks to both of you,

my real concern is just reliability, want to put 150k on this car without a major engine job

the noise just sounded real nasty yesterday AM , not like any other car I have had
and it seems that infinity covers everything but the timing chain!

A well maintained VQ will go over 200K miles. How's the transmission? Have you done an ATF flush before? I've seen issues with the transmission in that particular model year. But since you have extended warranty, then you're good. But it would be a good idea to to flush or at the very least, do drain and refill.

OK
will do at 60k service, i beleive thats needed to keep warrenty in compliance

thank you
PS
did run a 2000 i30 to 162K, started to he some strange noise sounded like the transmission, when slowing down[just a guess in retrospect] just traded in in rather than worry
always traveling NJ turnpike long distance and did not want the hassle in the dead of winter
so picked up this low mile [28k]2004 i35 with service record, get the feeling i wasted the $$ on ther wartenty
but thats done
drive well
take it easy
and i like the value you get on a used I30/I35
