Ok, so I took a 92 240 with engine problems from my friends hands in hopes of fixing it up. The engine starts but barely idles, at the same time there is a loud clicking/tapping sound coming from the engine when it goes over 1500rpm. At the same time, if I dont give the car gas, it stalls out. Am I looking at a head rebuild here? or is the problem much simpler?

probably not a head rebuild but posibly timing chain work and maybe some tuning to get it running right.

Ok, so here's an updated, you were completely right that it was the timing chain. According to the mechanic, the timing chain is hitting and making the clunking sound. The only thing is, he said that the sound is coming from there and also possibly the crank or rod bearing area. He is recommending that the whole engine be swapped out and says it will cost 1500-1800. Any ideas on what I should do???
