I have a 1991 240 and i was driving down the road and i wanted to see what its got and i was redlining it but not for long. So i continued to drive and as i was slowing down i put it in neutral and my rpms said 0. Then i pulled over to the side of the road and i tried to start it and the only way i could keep the car running is if i held on the gas. If i let go then it just dies. It makes this really loud sound that bangs. any ideas?

redlining is bad and not advised. loud banging noises coupled with no start, hard start, or rough run point to internal engine problems. a video would help determine the extent of your damage although i dont suggest running your car long and i seriously advise against driving it in this condition.

I'll add a video of the problem. I took the valve cover off and there was no damage to the cam shafts or the timing chain. I'm wondoring if it's is something in the engine and that is gonna take time to fix??

Maybe timing chain jumped. Happend to be on my old KA. Whats the timing chain tensioners look like? can you push them in by hand? Put the engine on TDC and watch you cams. Your intake should be about 70 degrees to the left and the exhaust cam should be about 45 degrees to the right.

I charged the battery and now i tried to start it. It took awhile for it to start. When i held down the starter the engine slowly got faster and faster. Then it ran but only with my foot on the pedal but i noticed smoke coming from the front of the engine. This is when its cold. idk if its the starter just doing that but it smells kinda like something is cooking everytime i try to start . The starter makes a funny noice also when i try to start it. but idk if thats the engine or the problem it's giving it.

Once again it sounds like the engine jumped time. It must have advanced causing your hard starting and poor power. If it spun a bearing or something you wouldnt loose much power and it would be an obvious rod knock sound.
