Engine problem

I recently purchased a 1990 240SX fastback with 5spd. When I purchased the vehicle, the guy told me it needed a head gasket, but now I’m not quite sure. The car does not start, but sputters like it wants to start. Also, I know that I need a water pump gasket, is that a sign that there is more then what I was told? Any information would be helpful.

i dunno thats hard to tell it could be a million things. check for coolant in the oil, take out the oil dipstick and look for milky looking oil.
