I have a 2001 qx4 new motor engine pinging going up a hill?

Try 91 or higher octane fuel.

91 Pump Octane gas is certainly the first question.

Is the Service Engine Soon light on? Does it come on briefly when you first turn on the key?
And get the codes read -- there are some that do not turn on the SES light.

Check for vacuum leaks.

Check the timing.

How many miles on the truck?
