For those that have installed such a gauge, I as well ould like to know how to do it as well.

Is it better to use this type of oil plate: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...A1318

Or is it better to T it into the original but somewhat useless oil pressure gauge?

But if not using the oil plate how would you T in the oil temperature gauge?

'89-'94 VH45DE Oil pressure sending unit is threaded with a BSPT tap.

I pulled my "idiot light" oem sending unit off since by the time it switches on your motor is pretty much toast.

Very heavy, expensive to repair toast.

I also don't trust the sandwiche plates very much either.

Exactly, what were those engineers thinking make the light come on when its too late.

But if you disconnected it, is the light always one sice its not getting a signal?

do you have a pressure gauge hooked up?

If you unplug the sensor, the dash light will never come on.

I re-tapped my block for an Autometer 2-1/8" full sweep pressure gauge.Same spot as the oem unit but I used a NPT tap for the sending unit that came with my gauge.

Saw that, didn't think a turbo had anything to do with a gauge.

Usually, at the minimum, there is a manifold pressure gauge.

To know NICO, you must read all the threads, grasshopper.

Right but his post only shows the gauge installed on his car.

Another problem I have is where to mount them.

I might just get that multi-gauge thing as long as it can oscillate between the gauges.

if you go to sears or any other hardware store you shoudl be able to get a fitting to go from BSPT to a standard thing... If you're nervous about retapping an aluminum block (I might be)

I hope you plan on removing the engine or atleast the drivers side exhaust manifold to do any work like tapping threads. I just finished installing a new oil pressure sensor in my Q without removing anything and it is incredibly tight and time consuming. It took me approx 4 hrs to install/juggle many tools (most of the time all at once). Hope this helps.

4 hours? Search posts here for instructions from a member that says he changed his oil pressure sender in 6 minutes!

This took you 4 hours:

Also in pager LC-4 in the 1994 FSM.

But I will if I find some time and money go with an oil sandwich plate because its the easiest way to do it.

Congrats on the 3700 posts Qship96.

Yup. It's pretty much inaccessable from the top. The steering rack/engine cradle/header & transmission lines all contribute to get in the way. Hats off to a 6 min. change. I woulda killed to do that! Lol.

Qship96, Who was the guy that did it in 6 min?

Flagship, The guy must have had tiny arms, hands and fingers.

I'm not the guy Qship96 is referring to, but I can also change mine out in under 10 minutes.( I, of course, have cheated and removed the BS heat shielding and fiberglass crap from the headers beforehand, so I have more room.)

I would say that changing the sender out in a few mins is reasonable but getting a tap up there and stuff might prove difficult.

Re tapping the block is a bad way to do it in my opinion because ALOT can go wrong.

best way to go about it is a oil sandwich plate or tee in the sensor with another sensor.

Just remove oil pressure switch and replace with similar threaded oil pressure gauge sender- with a real gauge mounted, you dont need the idiot light.

IMO saying you don't trust a sandwich plate is like saying you don't trust a screw on filter. There is no difference in how they are installed, and its the same sealing mechanism. I would just get the sandwich plate. As long as its a name brand part and you install it correctly it will be fine. It will make installing the pressure and temp gauges easier and with a relocation kit it will make oil changes easier. I have one on my S14 and it is simple. None of this tapping blocks, and worrying about the seals, none of the pulling off manifolds ETC. Its a 15 minute install on an s-chassis and I imagine not much more on your car. And then another 15 minutes to get a pressure and temperature gauge hooked up, lines run through the firewall and then installed. That way you keep the dummy light and you have your gauge and if you want to go back to stock it is simple and easy. A quality sandwich plate will not hurt your car.

I think the one I got from Greddy (GREX) was like 90 for the full relocation kit (its been a while). I have not put on the temp gauge yet but the pressure gauge took less than 10 minutes (mostly running the line and mounting the gauge), and did not require draining any oil. A relocation kit will also make it easier for you in the future if you decide to run an oil cooler.
