I can't see why not. If I can use synthetic in my 1987 GM motor with no problems...you can use synthetic in you VQ30.

That is soooo funny

So Nissan doesn't recommend using a lubricant chemically designed to be a lubricant, but it's ok with well aged dinosaur fat?

I have heard that it's best to "break in" the engine with conventional oil. Something about providing needed friction for everything to seat properly, but after that, I don't see any reason to use the conventional.

I'd also go with a long life synthetic because spending over $50 every 3000 miles is pricey.

Mobile has one that's rated for 15,000 miles and Amsoil has one purported to last 30,000. Even if the stuff doubles the normal change interval (6,000), I'd be happy.

I changed my oil last night actually. I replaced the cheap, non-synthetic oil with Castrol Full Synthetic Blend. Not a huge power improvement, but I have noticed a major difference in how the car idles. I took it out for a test drive and at stoplights I couldn't even tell the car was running it was so smooth.

i was runnin standard castrol 5w30 gtx in my max when she passed. 225,000 miles on her. at around 180,000 mi i had the timing chains replaced, and my mechanic said to keep using the same stuff because the engine was clean as a whistle on the inside. thus, i will never use synthetic, unless i purchase a car that came with it from the factory and calls for it.

I have a friend who uses conventional oil in his Ford T Birdand it has about 150K

My 95 max has 153K and I use Synthetic

His engine smells like burned oil while mine doesnt

I would think his car is developing more carbon depositsthan mine

it also depends on the maintenance. i change oil every 3,000 miles regardless. i use a premium filter. if he has a leak somewhere, which is possible depending on how much preventive maintenance he has done, then of course it will smell while yours doesn't. you cant just smell an engine bay and tell whether or not someone is using synthetic. if its burning oil, it's burning oil. the motor does not decide to burn oil because it's conventional, it burns because of a mechanical issue or poor maintenance.

I am using an OEM filter from Nissan as they are only about$1.50 more than an Auto Zone one or Fram etc.

My mechanic told me if the fram plugs up it may nothave a way of bypassing oil to the engine

I am changing my syn oil and filter every 6K since I thinkthe syn lasts twice as long as conventional oil

I don't mean to be rude, but there's no basis for your decision. I'm not saying you should run synthetic, just that, if a lubricant was chemically engineered to by a lubricant, it is by default better than dino oil.

I drive around 1500 miles a month and I personally don't like changing my oil every 2 months. I find it annoying as all hell. With that being said, i have the second highest mileage I30/max on these boards. Which would imply that I'm lucky or am doing something right. In either event, the synthetic isn't doing anything bad to my engine.

The first two rounds of synthetic came out prematurely dirty. This last one is lasting much better. I assume that means the engine wasn't very clean and the synthetic is breaking up sludge.
