I was browsing the net and stuff and came across this

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showt ... ght=sludge

Im wondering what our engines look like on the inside, i think as since i got the pathfinder at 17k i have been changing oil every 3.0k-3.5k-4k max miles, im at 118k miles now. I;ve also been using full synthetic i think theres only minimal buildup just from use. Just a question to throw out there what kind of buildup do you guys think we have?i think that our engines are nowhere close to that kind of sludge buildup unless you dont change your oil often.

Even Toyotas don't get like that unless somebody just doesn't change the oil.

When I went through my '72 240Z at about 95,000 miles, there was NOT sludge, and almost no wear. We checked all the clearances as we tore it down, and EVERYHING was in spec for a new motor. Except for the valve that had a the tip of the stem broken off, and the little ding the valve put in the top of the piston, and the tach that was reading 500 RPM low, so I was over revving 500 RPM at most stoplights. If i had been a daily driver, I'd have just ground in a new valve, and smoothed down the top of the piston. But it was my baby so it got a five angle valve job, balanced and blue printed. Sold it in about '88 because I didn't drive it much. ('87 PF was my DD), and there's no garage door opener on that stall. It was still on the road a couple of years ago, and that engine was still running up to couple of months before I saw it. The owner had wrecked his race 240Z and put the full race motor in my old chassis. The original engine was still in his garage.

MESSAGE: CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER ON SCHEDULE.

my motor had used synthetic since brand new

i was using valvoline synthetic, i can say that when i pulled the head apart to replace the camshaft it was sludged up a little bit. i recently hadnt been impressed with valvoline as i use to be by my moms car which has some varnish built up and i have only used valvoline every 4000 for 170k

in my q i switched it to penzoil high mileage and after 3 oil changes it was finally starting to turn light brown yellow on the dipstick where during the 3 changes i had black on the stick as soon as it was poured in.

i must say in my experience penzoil has some serious cleaners in it cause my engine has been wiped of sludge after this and i have to recommend it hard core

i have pulled many motors apart in my life and i have to say that castrol is worst it leaves this gold film on everything and its like a varnish/sludge crap that can be scrapped off its weird,

i went on a tangent but whatev we talking about oil

Actually Toyotas have been having sludge problems for the last decade, especially the 3.0 V6 they had... it was pretty notorius

yea i beleive it had something to do with inadequately sized oil return holes, and too small of an oil filter screen on the oil pump not allowing sufficient flow
