Ok well I have a few problems on my 1989 Maxima/Auto 163k1. When I start my car up(cold start) for the first 10 or so seconds the engine is rather noisy/clattery then it dies down...also it idles at above 1000 rpms for a little while too. Normal?2. Ocassionally during acceleration there is a raspy bees in a can sound that occurs briefly. I sounds as if there is and exhaust leak right in the back of the enging near the beginning of the y pipe. The exhaust is newly replaced by the previous owner but i am not sure if the quality of workmanship was up to par. Could it be a bad gasket or broken ex. man. studs?3.What would be the best way to fix a slipping auto trans? Thanks a whole bunch.Steve:D

Try adding some Trans-X to the transmission, its worth a shot.

Try changing your oil and using a diff weight oil.. what are yu using now ?

by doing this it will cure your noise on start up..

i think the noise being heard is posibly an exhaust leak and you have a flange gasket improperly seated. is this a j30 or u11 max? if its a j30 it could have a header pipe problem. pretty common on the body max. if its a u11 the 10 seconds of noise could be lifters not pumping up fast enough. try 5/30 and factory oil filter as a cheap method of checking it.

to solve ur #1, I have a similar noise, and its in part because my slack side guide is completely cracked in half and flapping off my timing chain, and because it take a moment for the chain to gather oil, the sound you hear is metal on metal, thats why when the chain gets oil, it dies down (thats my hypothesis anyway)
