On my 2009 V hatch 1.8, I get the "piston slap" only after total warmup. And it is louder inside the car. Sometimes I can't hear it outside at all, but quite clearly inside. Sometimes it is so bad the car seems like it is missing on one cylinder. The missing only happens at a certain stopsign, on the way home from work. Only happens once a month or so ( the missing).

The piston slap just about always happens once I've been driving the car for 15 minutes.

I'll never be able to get it to miss at the dealer though.

ANother weird thing : If I shut it off for 2 minutes and start it up again, the piston slap is gone.

Mine's been doing it since I got it but has gotten worse since and at this point is it sitting at a dealer where they are tearing it down to investigate the cause.

My Camaro has had piston slap when cold since it was new. Sometimes it can be so loud that people think I have a rod knocking. It goes away after the car warms up. 213k miles so far and it runs great.
I had a 1983 Celica with a 2.2 and it had a similar ticking sound all the time, not just when cold. It ran just fine with a ton of miles on it.

Putting 93 octane into an engine that only requires 87 does absolutely nothing except waste money.
