Ok, so thats a video of the noise i am talking about. Im not exactly sure as to what it is, but im worried it could be something serious if left unchecked. The car still idles fine and it wont make the noise until i start to rev it. It also drives fine with as far as i can tell no loss of power, seems to run like it was before that noise started up. So if anyone has experienced or knows what could be causing this to happen please let me know.

thanks, Shane

Whatever you recorded it with is overwhelmed by the volume of the engine noise so it's a little hard to be completely sure, but that sounds like a really bad rod knock. If it is you should not run that engine anymore. At best you are out a rod, but more likely the cranked is f*** too. Keep revving it and you will turn it into an air-cooled engine through the huge hole you blow through the block.

Ya i recorded it on my phone so i know its not the best quality video. I also know i shouldnt be revving it like that i just did it for the sake of the video since it only makes the noise when it is being revved. Im hoping its not the rod or crank. The noise itself actually sounds like its coming from my head but as u said it is hard to tell and me lacking experience on diagnosing problems doesnt help either.

You can normally tell the difference. A rod will sound like a rapid attack by a ballpeen hammer. Lifters sound like a drum solo with two 10mm bolts.

This is very much what mine sounds like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9eLMThlBZI

Not my video, but the sounds are very spot on.

Classic CA18 #2 or #3 rod knock. Keep revving it and you're going to ruin the crank. It was in the pre-cank runi stages, but no telling how long you've been playing with it. Again, the bottom end is need of servicing before a rod finds its way out of that cast iron block ;).

The crank is this video is still salvageable at this point. The OP's video tells me the crank is need of cutting and being re-fitted for over-sized bearings.

All depends on what you were doing before you heard the noise. If you're doing 8000rpm clutch dumps, yeah, that crank will need to be machined. If you were in full boost and riding hard, yeah, that crank will need to be machined. All in all, it sounded pretty nasty, but let's hope you didn't damage it too bad.

The best part you can buy for your s13 is another DD.

Speaking of rod knock, my mechanic recommended a remedy and I would like your guys' opinion.

He recommended welding up my oil bypass and running a racing oil filter (Canton) and getting rid of the oil cooler as it may contain metal now. With all of this, doing an oil change, attaching magnets to my oil pan and filter, driving it around for 300 miles or so and then get the bearings changed would be the most cost effective. Of course, he didn't guarantee it would 100% work, but the magnets should do a good job of getting metal shavings.

Does this sounds something wise to drive an engine with rod knock for 300 miles? I would figure a oil flush (with actual oil) and adequate idling would be enough with my Canton filter/ magnets as well.

Btw, don't mean to thread jack, but I feel it's pretty related.

That's just plain suicide, my friend. You're going to screw-up more than you can afford to fix. I wouldn't drive it while it's knocking if I were you.

No cheepo way to fix it. Rebuild is in order and you need to flush every oil passage to get the metal chunks out. I would weigh that guy's advice accordingly, it's alarmingly bad on this item.

If you have a factory oil cooler, you should keep it.

It's not the factory oil cooler, but it is only $60 for another core and I'll just reuse my lines.

But thanks for the info guys, I kind of thought it was a dumb idea to drive it with rod knock. And to think I was just about to do that today, lol. Luckily I have only idled the car and drove it off the tow truck to it's garage.

Well, time to let it chill and save up for a rebuild. Since I am sure the crank will need to be removed, I'll save up for pistons.

They are all rebuilt. Don't know how much you're looking to spend, but I'm not overly expensive. Basically, you'll get what you pay for.

I have one nearly completed. If you just want the long block, let me know and we'll take this to PM and discuss it further.
