Pls be nice, I'm new to this engine maintenance stuff..

I've been driving around for almost 2 months since i got the s13 with a slight clicking noise. Sounds normal so I didnt bother.

TOday, I went to pick up my suspension stuff and on the way home, the car started to act weird. On 1,2,3 gears, its wont accelerate like usual, and when I got home, the engine noise got worse. Listened to it for a few mins, seems like there's actual metal rubbing underneath my valve covers....towards the cams and timing chain.

Pls give me some pointers on what to do/check to know whats going on.

Any info is greatly appreciated. This is my daily car since my other one is still at the shop:( so I need this fixed to get to work.

pull the valve cover see if you can see whats hitting, look down the front cover with a flash light see if the chain is slack, look at the guide on the drivers side of the engine is it in tack or broken to peices? once the covers off dont run the car if you dont need to you'll have oil all over the place if you do.

Consider the mileage, has the timeing chain been replaced? From my experience, I had a bad rattle, replaced the chain and there was a guide that was making all the noise that Nissan did away with.

I am assuming this is a single over head cam since his sig says 89 240 ka24e so there is no guide to remove.

if its a dual cam engine there is a guide up top that breaks of. that has been discontinued by nissan since it was discoverd not to be nessesary.

What do I look for in the oil? I just changed my oil a month ago.

well then look for the guide up top to be broke then. he means to check your oil level and if it smells like gas or looks unusually thin.

Just took off the valve cover today, and found out that the "guide" is broke. No wonder I hear that grinding noise, the guide is sitting on the chain. Is it ok for me to not to replace it? I called the dealership and told me that I dont have to replace it(according to a note in their computer).

Can anybody verify this?

I started driving it around for a couple of mins., seems like its ok

Hey NISTECh(or to anybody),question for you....

My engine shakes sideways, do you think my mounts are worn out? Is there anything else I need to check? I'd like to do my own"work" as much as possible to my 240 so that I can learn...any info is greatly appreciated:)

My engine shook bad because one of my engine mounts all the bolts where loose completely. You might want to just check em just slide up under your carr and search for the engine mounts and bolts.

I tightened them down now im not worried my engine is gonna slide out of my bay haha.

It could be your lounts but it could also be caused by an engine miss or 2. ith the engine shut off. push on your valve cover to one side then pull it toward you. does the engine move excessivly? if so you got a mount prob. if it bearley moves over an inch you may be missing.

I havent' done what you told me, but when I took my girl to work earlier, she(she's not a car freak but she noticed the "power" lose) noticed that the car doesn't have the "push" anymore. The way the car sounds like talking with phlegm in your throat.

Do you think there's possible leaks? Do you think I need to do a basic tune up? I got my car from a friend, he said that he just got it tuned up and there's no rust....I found rust in the hatch so I dont believe him anymore...

ok I have no idea what lounts are. but I was reffering to mounts. you may have a weak airflow meter. search for the testing procedure on it. see if its not registering right.
