It's pretty quiet right and hard to hear. I only hear it at idle speed... but i notice it. When the engine is idling it can only be heard in the car with everythign off and the doors shut. Even then it's hard to hear. OUtside of hte vehicle i can't hear it over the fan, etc.

IF i put a big screw driver near the #1 cylinder and put my ear on it... it sounds like one of those old fashion bell alarm clocks.

I hope to God that id on't have some big repair coming.

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for the help.

i realize this is some distance from the #1 cyl. But it is known incidents I know of on the 98 pathy. Check your exhaust sheilds where the 2 pipes on the front side of the muffler meet the pipes on either side of the transfer case. the mounting brackets welded to the pipe tend to break. Another thing to look at is the manifolds they are known to crack between the 2nd and 3rd ports on both sides of the engine. more common with the right. there is actually an updated manifold and sheild for the right side. your are also coming up on T- belt replacement at 105k. could have a little slack in the belt. there is also another sound heard from the water pump but it sounds more like a faint version of the brake sensors hitting the rotor, the sound is from the internal seal in the water pump.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

Yes, I plan to have my belt changed around 95-98k. I ahve to get some money saved up. When i ahve the belt done I guess that would be a good time to have professional inspect the exhaust and manifold. Nissan actually increased the exhaust warranty to 100k, so i planned on having that inspected really good when the timing belt was changed.

There is one more question I have. When i'm getting the timing belt done I heard it would be intelligent to have the water pump, crank and cam seals changed out. What are your thoughts?

yes because the water pump and cam sels are inside the timing cover and cant be removed with out taking the timing belt off. it saves a bundle in labor time. although the vg33e engine does not seem to have the cam seal leak problem the vg30e had for many years. i would recommend doin the t-belt tensioner while in there. I am curious about how you faound out your manifolds had been uped to 100k warrenty. was it from a web site or did nissan contact you and tell you?

oh something else they may recommend when doing the t-belt is the bypass hose behind the timing cover.

When i was reading the TSB's i found a letter from nissan to the owners of 96-98 pathys that said the manifold was extended from 60/60k to 100/100k. :) I assume I'm covered. Do i need to call nissan or anything since i'm not the original owner?

I hope the manifold is what i'm hearing. I want this truck to last a long time and you never know if the previous owner took good care of it.

I did have a mechanic inspect it before i bought it including compression tests though, so i should be good.

Thanks for the help.

My exhaust become noticably louder today so i called the 800 number i had for nissan. They told me i'm good for 100k or 100 months on the exhaust manifold. I got all registered in their computer since i wasn't the original owner. :)

Now i just have to deal with the local nissan place, which has terrible service.

Thanks a lot for the help. Hopefully the sounds I am hearing are all exhaust related and i dont' have some sticking valve or something.

If i do have a valve or lifter problem as well, how serious is that?

Do you want a copy of the announcement from Nissan to post somewhere here? It's for 96-98 pathfinders and I'm sure a lot of epople would benefit to know the warranty was extended.

nah i knew about it was just wonderin where you got the info from. you just need to go in and have the manifold replaced. I doubt you have a lifter problem. have yet to see a collapsed lifter on a r50 path.

oh, i found it specifically on alldatadiy.com

it's like $25 per YEAR as opposed to one days access from nissan for around 20-25
