Hey, I have my engine in bits......half rebuilt it.....then found out I need a new head.after thinking about it......is it worth me buying forged pistons and rods now while im spending the cash?

I don't think that I'll ever be wanting more than 300 RWHP, and probably only around 200 RWHP for the moment.

If so.....whats a good brand? ( that doesn't cost an arm and a leg ).

and what about a turbo?......would prefer not to have to have a new manifold....so does that limit me to a T28?If so.....is a T28 capable of reliably producing 300 RWHP?what are my other options?

I already have:new rings and bearingsnew clutch3" exhaustVR4 FMICDSM 450cc injectorsand a filter.oh yeah....it's in a 940kg Datsun 1600, so there is no A/C or power steering to worry about either

cheers for any info!

i was running my ca18 with fully stock bottom end and injectors in combination with a T28BB and rouphly 280HP for 6 months without any trouble... i suggest that you would be better off spending that doe on a nice bodykit or something like that...

Its a bluebird. even if he goes crazy with a BRE-style body kit, he'd be out US$250

A T28 won't limit you, thoes injectors will. You can't reliably get more than 250hp out of thoes - a 1G DSM will out flow thoes with the stock turbo...

if you do end up getting some, I'd recommend going through Race Engineering. They have very good service and potentially stock the parts you are looking for. I got my CP pistons through them, as have several others on this board. They carry both Crower and Pauter connecting rods for the CA, both listing for $699/set. Between pistons/con rods, rings and bearings, you'll be looking at $1000 in just parts (no labor if you want to get oversized pistons, or have the piston's and con rods connected) Seems like a little bit of over kill to me if you're just going for 300hp, but at least you'll rest assured knowing your bottom end won't be failing anytime soon. Perhaps you might want to spend that money on a set of nice cams and put it into head work or into the turbo or manifold?

If you got the $$$s to toss, then go for it. But if you're looking for a solid bottom end to support around 200-300ish HP, the get you some new rings and clean up your bottom end. The stock CA18DET pistons aren't as weak as many claim. Once again, fuel and timing is the key. A T28 turbocharger will possibly support 300hp at the crank, but I won't be pushing for it at the wheels. Save your money and clean-up your engine with rings, new headgasket, re-shotpeened rods, new headbolts, new rod and main bearings, seals, etc, etc. All of these come up to less than $500 U.S. dollars for a clean fresh start. I've always had 300+whp on an everyday car with A/C and P/S on the stock CA and it does just fine. Oh yeah, it lasts as well.
