Engine miss firing in certain RPM range

I have an '89 Nissan 240SX with the KA24E engine. For some unknown reason, the motor hesitates when in the 1500 to 2500 RPM range. The motor has just been rebuilt. We pulled it apart to make sure the problem was not internal, then put it back together to have the same problem keep occuring. I am thinking it is something in the ignition, but want to get an educated opinion on the matter before I start replacing stuff. :help
