Ok, lengthy noob post follows.
I'm getting a CA soon and would like to clear some things up, or atleast get some good ideas.
Management - I was looking at the GReddy E-Manage for my duties, but it appears either people don't like it for the CA or they just haven't tried it? Stock injectors run out of push at about where? 11-12psi on the T25? The stock turbo and SMIC shouldn't be pushed past that level either, right? To run a larger turbo and injectors, I would need some sort of "piggy-back" programable electronics, correct? If I were to get the E-Manage and its software and tool, could I re-program it for each upgrade myself? I'm pretty much a noob to tuning so it'd have to be pretty straight-forward for me to be confident with it. What's the difference between the E-Manage and the Apex'i S-AFC? The GReddy allows more control, correct? What does the SAFC allow me to do other than adjusting my AFR? Would it accomodate larger injectors, turbo, and MAFS? I also heard that the SOHC KA MAFS is usable with the CA/SR harnesses and actually provides a bit more capacity than the stock CA one, is this true?
I really don't have the money for a big, fancy stand-alone, nor the knowhow probabaly needed to use/tune it. The extent of my mods, far in the future due to money restraints, consists of a decently sized T3 (60? Super 60?) with appropriate manifold, injectors, FMIC, and fancy BOV. Well, those are what I'm immediately having questions about anyway. If the E-Manage and S-AFC are either not viable or effective to a higher hp level, would an ECU retune be a good route? I plan on putting on all the big mods (turbo, injectors) at once so a single remap to accomodate those mods sounds good to me, seeing as I probably won't be upgrading those. Does JWT do CA ECU's? If they do, what's that cost? About $500-600? Even after the new ECU, would it be a good idea to run atleast an S-AFC anyway? Just to fine tune if need be? But the ECU should cover everything, like AFRs at different levels of boost and RPMs, right? Feel free to shed any and all info you have in this area.
Boost Controllers - I was looking at the basic Blitz single solenoid ($250) and their Type S Dual Solenoid ($310) EBC's. They seem relatively inexpensive in comparison, and good products. Any input there? Are $300 EBC's really that much better than $30 MBC's? In what way, other than quick adjustability while driving. Also, I just planned on getting a used turbo timer for like 50 bones or something. Any specific ones to steer clear of?
Turbos - I know this has been beaten to death, and I've read TONS on it, but most people seem to come to rest on turbos that seem more fit for the KA...In the end, I think I'd like my setup to be capable of about 300rwhp if needed. Dee seems to be partial to T3/T4s and while I know no turbo is going to spool very quickly on our small engines, I don't want to wait 'til I'm legally drinking age for that neck-snapping boost. I've read Maximum Boost but that doesn't go over how to read Flow Maps very well. I was just guessing a moderately trimmed T3 should do well for my purposes. Any objections? Suggestions? Anyone have some different T3 sized turbo charts for the CA? At what pressure would these be most efficient? 10psi? 20psi? Help me out.
Intercoolers and Injectors Unless you guys know of any good (read:cheap) kits, I'm probabaly looking at getting just a Hybrid($500) or Forge($340) core and having custom piping made, again for cost effectiveness. Although I've heard that IC's from Volvo 740 Turbo's are quite large and flow a good amount, but how efficient are they? I can likely get one whenever I need from the local yard. Would that be a good option? And where would I go for piping to be made? Muffler shop? Any idea on average cost? What should the pipes be made out of?
As for the injectors, what size would be appropriate for my goal? I see J-Spec is selling some nice 440cc ones for a nice price, at what level do those die out? Howabout 550's? J-Spec's comes with a new rail, will I need it to go larger than stock? One of my first planned purchases is a new Walbro 255lph pump so I should have that covered.
PLEASE point out anything else I've missed or you just feel like adding. (Besides bigger exhaust, gauges, and suspension stuff)This is going to be my first big automotive endeavor and I'm determined to do it right, the first time. I know that half-assing it and having to go back and fix it will end up costing more anyway so I wanna do the best I can this time 'round. Any and all help is appreciated, or even just opinions/input.
Thanks in advance guys,
Blake (Future CA Freak)
