engine making rattling noise, like a bunch of tin cans

hey all, on my ka-e 240, whenever i shift gears, if i dont shift fast enough, my car makes this rattling noise, like theres a bunch of tin cans tied to my motor or something, its really loud, and it only happens sometimes, but when i told my mechanic about it, he went and took a ratchet to somethin under the hood and it was fixed, now its doin it again. also when it makes this noise, the car seems to drive slower than normal. any sugg???, thanks

Sounds like one of your heat shields are lose.

it sound like heat shields. but u said u loose power when this happens?? maybe a clogged cat??? my car would make a noise like that and found out that i had a clogged cat.

Could be a clogged cat to, but before you spend money on fixing/buying a cat get a rachet and tighten the heatshield that covers the headers. Since you said it went a way when your mechanic tighten something under the hood.

I had an automatic trans on my 240 (89 fastback) and i heard what you are describing every time the car would go over 5,000 rmp. Right before the car would shift (or as it was shifting) i could hear a sounds like tin cans clankin around. I found it is was my exhaust was a little loose and it was just the engine shaking it... but these people seem to know what they are talking about so i'd say its probably your heat shield then.

well i removed the heat sheild over my exhaust header , 'cause it was all rusted, my header is cracked on the 2nd pipe from left up front, my cat is clogged, cause as soon as it warms up my car jerks and bogs down an' if i dont hit the gas at the stop light, it dies on me. also i think there is like 1 0r 2 bolts loose on me header. thnx for the input everyone
