Hey everyone, I have 2004 G35 Sedan, it seems that when I start driving, I hear a faint crackling sound from the driver side of the engine, it only lasts like 3 -5 seconds, if I floor it, that sound does not exisist or simply goes away ASAP. I only have 30k on it, did anyone else have this problem. I did check and oil is good

What kind of speed are we talking about here?

I think you are hearing engine pinging, and this means that you probably have some carbon buildup that needs to be cleaned out.

May be time for a cleaning session with BG44K or similar - there is a Nissan equivalent that the dealer can sell you.

Or bad gasoline perhaps too. Another possibility is to try and change to a better gasoline source.

THanks for the advice, we are talking about very low speed, somewhere between 20-30 MPH...

FOr Gasonline, IM using 91 from Shell. THe wierd thing is that it happens so fast and for such a minimum time that its hard to always duplicate incase I have infiniti check it out.

it isn't all that uncommon to hear a split second of spark knock before the knock sensors retard the timing...especially if the engine is lugging in a tall gear and you get on it. everyone once in a while i'll hear my engine ping for a split second...even when burning so-called premium fuel ...

Hey Thanks for the information, I did take the car in and they were unablel to duplicate the noise, so you dont think its something serious then. It just happens for like a couple seconds, wierd thing is I never heard it before, anything I can do to get it to go away

to prevent this, just more frequent oil changes with better oil. That is one way to help

please explain how more frequent oil changes would help spark knock...if indeed that is what he is hearing...

See I dont really know much on this noise, just that it happens for a slight bit, usually a few seconds and goes away...Not sure how serious of a problem it is, no check engine light and when I took it in for oil change they did not notice any leaks....What does the Spark plug knock sound like???

Thanks again, one last question, if it is the spark plug ping, would it happen when im in park and flooring it, because it does not do that, it only happens when im driving at low rpm, once im going fast, it does not seem to occur, would that still be the spark plug ping?

It could. Would be worse when accelerating from a low rpm and speed - and probably imperceptible at higher speeds.

Remember, this is still a SWAG. It may be something else, of course. However, it will not hurt to use some BG44K or the Nissan equivalent and see if this clears up the pinging. And, do try filling up with some premium gas from another gas station and see if that helps too.

well, I went and got some fuel cleaner in the car and engine cleaner. After two days, and I dont really drive too much, after half a tank of new gas, I was not able to notice the noise when driving tonite. I hope its fixed, not really sure, I floored the car beleiving the more gas burnining, the cleaner it may be. Question for you...do you think that the cleaner works overtime or should it have worked instantly.

Thanks

If you use an injector cleaner (like the BG44K), it can take some time to clean things out.

My approach is start with a low amount of gas, add the BG44K while at the gas station, fill up immediately, and go for a long drive. Like a quarter-tank worth, if you have the time. But, this is not strictly necessary per se.

Glad to hear that things are improving for your situation.

THanks Z

I had the hardest time finding BG44K, I even went to the dealer and they did not have it to sell, so I bought Slick 50 brand, fuel cleaner...Will keep you updated, going to the dealer on Wed. to have them check it outThanks again

Unfortunately, the Slick 50 fuel cleaner is not the best for this purpose. Either the BG44K or the Nissan Fuel Injector cleaner "equivalent to BG44K" (I am not entirely sure of this claim though) is much better.

I get my BG44K from eBay sources (just bid on 4 cans a few hours ago, as it happens!). Sometimes, http://www.everythinginfiniti.com has sales on it too.
