i have a 96 240. Today I was driving around town and a belt started squeeling and then jsut as quick as it started, it stopped. But then the battery light and the brake lights came on.I was really close to home... less than a block so i just eased there. The altenator belt is gone!.. is there anything on that belt beside the altenator? And on the passenger side of the engine.. and wheel well.. there is a thick black rubbery liquid covering it withi chunks of black in it. I got a cloth and checked it.. its not grease.. It looks like my belt Liquified and slung all over the engine!Any thoughts?

The belt getting fried is probably what happened. When the belt started slipping when you heard the sound, but when it broke, that's probably when the sound stopped. I'm not a mechanic, but I did change the waterpump on my SR. The waterpump (on the S14 SR) and the alternator are on the same belt.

What's gonna suck is taking other belts off to get to that one. You should be able to replace it yourself though.
