I have a 91 Q45 and although it's running great it will not pass smog because the engine light will not light up. (all the other tests passed)
I'm looking for instructions on how to get at the bulb.
it looks like I have to take the dashboard apart to do it.
Also what are the best bulbs to replace it with and while I'm in there is there anything else that should be replaced ?

Before you pull the dash apart to replace what may not be a burned out bulb check the position of the screw used to pull codes on the back of the ECU. The ECU is located behind the passenger side kick panel next to the door. If the screw was not returned to the correct position by the previous owner after pulling codes, either fully CCW or fully CW (don't recall which), the CEL will not light up. The back of the ECU will tell you the correct position. It's happened to a few members in the past.

To get to the ECU, remove the kick panel by removing one 10mm nut under the carpet flap, remove the ECU connector, and then remove the 3 screws holding the ECU to the side panel. You may as well pull the codes (if there are any) while you have it out. Full instructions for pulling codes are at Q45.org.

kudos to you that did the trick. I knew about the ECU and hadstried that...but what I had not done is wait 2 secs at the full stop on the screw turn one ecu before I switched it back to counterclockwise. Once I did that it cleared the ecu and the engine light reappears...
definitely easier than tearing up the dash... much appreciated tip
