Any Nissan Mechanic on duty?

I am helping my neigbour fixing his 95 altima automatic. The problem it has is, the speedometer sometimes works sometimes doesn't. When it's not working, the engine light will come on and it has little hesitation problem. I am thinking it's the VSS going out. I want to make sure my assumption is correct. So, I want to run a diagnostic code check before changing out the VSS. I opened up the kick panel on the passenger side, I found the ECU doesn't have the diagnostic screw. My question is how do you guys get the trouble code out of the car? I don't have the hand held reader.

Also, where is exactly the VSS located? I know it should be on the transmission somewhere.

Thanks in advance

well, if there is no diag screw then you need consult to read the code. if it only comes on when the speedo goes out then its speedo related. the vss sends to the speedo head which sends to the ecm. you need to check the vss first. the vss on an altima is on the top of the rear section of the trans. look under the master cyl and go down. the axles come out to either side. you can pull it out and check for ac voltage with it spinning real fast.
